DIY Handmade Christmas gift :: Wood Slice Photo Ornament

We recently went out and visited our family in Utah and Idaho for the first time in three years. Of course, we took loads of pictures on our trip! Flying with kids is not my favorite thing. I am excited to turn some of these precious pictures into Wood Slice Photo Ornaments for all the Grandparents and Great-Grandparents for Christmas. I know it will mean a lot to each of them!

How to Make a Wood Slice Photo Ornament Tutorial

Supplies:

  • 3.5″ Diameter Wood Slice {make sure it is smooth on the flat surface of the wood.}
  • Water Transfer Paper {I used Mambi Makers brand. You can find Water Transfer paper online here}
  • Printer {I used my Canon PIXMA iP8720 Printer}
  • Foam Brush
  • Scissors
  • Mod Podge
  • Drill
  • Red Ribbon
  • Jute Twine
  • Dish of water
  • Pencil

Photo craft

  1. Print your desired photo in 4×6 size on Water Transfer Paper following the directions on the packaging. Allow the ink at least 30 seconds to dry before moving to step 2.

Note: I just started using my Canon iP8720 Printer for my crafts and I love the top loading paper and the vibrant colors it prints. Plus it can print up to 13″x19″!

2. Lay your wood slice over the top of your 4×6 photo and trace around the wood slice using a pencil. Make sure the wood slice covers the part of the picture you want to transfer to the wood slice.

3. Cut out the picture by cutting just inside the pencil circle so that it leaves a slight wood border around the entire image. Trim any corners as needed.

4. Following the directions for your Water Transfer Paper, place your picture in a bowl of water. My Water Transfer Paper directions had me hold my picture flat in the water for 1 minute. Carefully peal off the paper backing to reveal your transferred image on a thin sheet.

5. Place your transferred image on top of your wood slice and press flat. Allow to dry. {I sped the drying time up with my hair dryer. wink wink} After it was dry, I used a little Matte Mod Podge in places that didn’t adhere well. Then I did a thin coat of Mod Podge over the top of the picture to seal it.

6. Drill a small hole at the top and use jute twine to make a loop. I then tied a small piece of red ribbon around the twine to add a festive, Christmas  look.
