Happy Tuesday! Today I want to show you my first ever garden. I am rather proud of it….especially when I saw this…..
In my unbiased opinion, that is the HAPPIEST little veggie seedling ever. Looks like its got ginormous ears, that are completely adorable.
{ok, maybe i’m obsessing a little too much over a 2 inch plant, but hey, you don’t know how black my thumb is! i’ve killed every plant ever given to me. in a matter of days usually.}
Here’s how that little guy came about.
- First we took out the grass
and weeds. - Davis built a frame for our soon-to-be raised planter garden.
- Davis loosened up the dirt with a shovel and then we evened out the plot.
- We put wire down and secured to the wood to hopefully protect from pesky rodents. {we’ll see if it works!!}
- We then filled the garden with clean dirt.
- Then I planted seeds and marked them with paint stir sticks.
Now making this garden was not all business…
There were a plethora of worms to hunt and find. and hold. and tickle. Davis had fun teaching Gavin how fun worms can be. {and how to gross mommy out}
So that’s how this cutie sprouted.
It now has some Tomato friends and Strawberries. And I’m just praying they continue growing!

Total black thumb! I have started a garden every year for about 15 years and I sitll manage to kill everything and never get any fruit! About the only thing I can grow is luffa. Super easy to grow…it actually takes over the entire backyard.
Love Gardening! Mine is started, and the Tomatoes go in this weekend.
I’m also a total picture taking nerd when seedlings come up. It just feels so good to have grown a delicate plant that we’ll eat from. I just put up chicken wire around my garden because of the influx of rabbits in the suburbs. I leave a lot of clover in the grassy areas for them, but I really want my lillies and veg. Looks great, have fun with it!
We have a garden. So far only broccoli is in it but our strawberry plant is doing good too. We’ve been gardening now for 3 years. I used to have a less than green thumb but I’m getting there. We do it as a family and are learning together. I love watching the plants grow so I totally get your excitement about a two inch plant. Good luck!

Oh you have a little sprout! Lovely! I just built my first garden to grow veggies this summer & I’m so excited about it! Here’s to a great growing season!
Cucumbers? I’m so envious. I can’t wait to get back to a place to have my own patches of soil.
I definitely used to have a black thumb…in college my roommate and I couldn’t even keep an indoor bamboo plant alive! But I decided this year it was time to try again, so we planted an indoor herb garden in a couple of little pots, and they’re growing! I totally understand the feeling of being super thrilled about a plant smaller than a pencil eraser :-)
I have a big garden–about 50′ X100′. We grow asparagus, strawberries, tomatoes (22 plants this year!), red & white onions, potatoes, broccoli, carrots, beans, all kinds of peppers & lettuces, cukes, zukes, squashes, a little bit of: eggplant, okra, brussel sprouts and TONS of pumpkins and gourds! (Gosh, did I leave anything out?) We also have grapes, blackberries and currants that line my garden & a large orchard with pears, peaches and apricots–we’re working on replenishing the apple, plum, peach and pear trees with new ones planted last year. I LOVE to grow as much of our own food as possible; I preserve everything that we don’t eat fresh and we enjoy that all winter long. SOOO happy to see your first garden! What a joy! And sooo good for the kids! Please consider keeping a garden journal (http://livelylatte.blogspot.com/2012/04/saturday-in-garden-garden-journal.html)–I think the kids would enjoy this as well; and look into composting (http://livelylatte.blogspot.com/2012/03/saturdays-in-garden-compost-101.html).
I also have two large herb gardens along the back and side of our house that I cook with ALL summer long. Learning to cook with fresh herbs is UH-MAZing! The flavors are unbeatable–and you can squeeze herbs in among your flowers if you’re short on space. Keeping them trim (easy to do when you cook with them!) will keep them beautiful all through the growing season. Sorry for the long comment–I think gardening is my favorite topic! Especially this time of year!

When our house is finished this summer I hope we’ll be able to start some simple planters on the deck. I do NOT have a green thumb, though!

I love gardening, and the seedling picture is so sweet! Where I live it is just too hot in the summer, so I am still trying to figure that out. But, in the winter it thrives. Have fun! It is great for the kids too!

Yes, I live in Arizona and can be 100 degrees or hotter for months! It makes gardening much more challenging in the summer.
Your seedling is adorable! I can’t plant anything outside until the risk of frost has past (early to mid May in Chicagoland) but I started over 90 seedlings inside and they are doing amazingly well! This is my first try at starting from seeds and I treat each one like a child! I get so excited to see new growth each day. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they all survive and make it through the outdoor transition. Can’t wait to see how your garden progresses!

it is happily adorable :)
I get just as excited as you to see something actually growing! It’s like a miracle! ;) honestly we started our garden last year, and it’s one of the happiest things I’ve ever done. Serious.
We planted a garden last year…herbs and several tomato plants. The squirrels kept getting at the tomatoes! Just when we thought we could pick one it would be gone. But, will try again this year…!
Aww love your lil garden. I can’t wait to have a house so I can grow a garden too! But for now, I’ll settle with a balcony garden ;)

Well, I pretty much have a brown thumb :) If it isn’t really, really hardy, then it usually doesn’t make it lol We have had a garden for years and I finally gave up a few years ago and now I just buy it from those that have a green thumb ;)
How cute! I love that little seedling! :-) I am TRYING to plant some things this year on our patio — some herbs, really, and some succulents. But I don’t have the best track record with keeping things alive, either, so we’ll see how this goes, lol! ;-)
Yay for gardens! Planting marigolds nearby will also deter some pests and rodents.

You are going to do great. Just don’t let them dry up, or drown, and they will grow. Some “experts” don’t even recommend adding amendments. I do add them because it makes sense that they need nutrients. I have had a veggie and berry garden for about 3 years, and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It makes me so happy to grab some lettuce, tomatoes, etc. for salads, or tons of stuff for soup. I only cook when I am harvesting my produce, otherwise we eat out. Have fun watching your little guys growing from newborn to adult right before your eyes—I always feel like it’s magic–every single time. I would love to do time lapsed photography to see it quickly growwwww. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I know exactly how you feel admiring your sprouts. That is one of my favorite times when I garden. It is so rewarding knowing something is growing from a seed you planted. Kinda like how you feel when you first find out you’re pregnant! I have vegetable and flower gardens everywhere, and I am still amazed when things start sprouting and growing in the spring. I am SOOOO glad that I’m not the only one that gets giddy about a sprout that small! :) There is something magical and exciting about growing food in your own back yard!! Going out to my garden to grab an ingridient for my meal is probably my favorite thing about cooking!
