Do you like to dress your littles in Christmas attire? Do you like to make them cute little holiday outfits? I’ll admit, I wasn’t super into the holiday outfits until I had a girl! I realized she didn’t have a Christmas outfit, so I whipped one up last week! I had the cutest Christmas fabric and pom pom trim I was dying to use! {see my Instagram} So I made a cute Holly Berry shirt {tutorial coming soon!} and this adorable Candy Cane Stripe Pom Pom skirt Tutorial for her! Both are super easy and they look fabulous together!
Candy Cane Stripe Pom Pom Skirt
Isn’t she the cutest thing ever?! She loved getting her picture taken! For all of 2 minutes. Then she just wanted to eat the candy canes and dance around! haha!
I made this easy skirt with a paper bag waist in about 1 hour. I love paper bag waists! I think they are so feminine and pretty. I think it balances the pom poms well too. A paper bag waist is super easy to do. It literally only adds one extra seam to get the look. Its a breeze.
This little girl slays me with her big blue eyes and blond hair! And let’s not even talk about Daddy. She has him wrapped around her little pinky, to say the least! So here is my easy pom pom skirt tutorial with paper bag waist band.
Pom Pom Skirt Tutorial with Paper Bag Waist
Supplies:
- 1/2-3/4 yard Cotton Fabric {for sizes 4 and under}
- 1 yard White Pom Pom Trim
- Thread
- 1 yard of 1″ White Elastic
- Fray Check
- Measure your child and/or measure skirts that she wears. My 2.5 year old has a 20″ waist and her skirts are about 11″ in length.
WAIST: Take your child’s Waist measurement and divide by 2 and then add 5″ {can add more for a looser fit}. So my equation was: 20/2 = 10 + 5″ = 15″ for the Waist.
LENGTH: My little girl needed an 11″ finished length. Add 5″ to the finished length. So my equestion was 11″ + 5 = 16″ for Length.
Cut 2 pieces of fabric to fit the measurements you determined for the Length and Waist of your child. I cut 2 pieces of fabric 15″ wide {waist} by 16″ high {length}.
Then with right sides together, sew sides seams together using a 1/4″ inseam.
How to Sew Paper Bag Waist
2. Fold over 2.5″ at the top of the skirt and iron. Then sew 1 complete seam 1″ from the fold. Then sew a second seam about 2.25″ from the fold and leave a 3″ gap. {this will be for the elastic in Step 3}
Note: The first seam you sew creates the paper bag waist. The second seam is for the elastic casing.
3. Cut your elastic to fit your child’s waist. I cut mine to 20″. Then attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread through the elastic casing. Then over lap the elastic about 2″ and then sew across just the elastic 5-10 times to secure elastic. Then pull elastic back into waist band and top stitch the 3″ gap closed.
4. Hem the skirt by folding over 1/4″ at the bottom and ironing and then folding over and ironing another 1/4″ and top stitching.
5. Turn skirt right side out and top stitch the pom pom trim to the bottom of the skirt. Apply Fray Check to the ends of the trim so that it won’t fray or unravel at the ends when washed.
And that’s one cute skirt made in about 1 hour! Can’t beat it!
Now I want to make a matching one for me. Wouldn’t it be so cute to have twinning Christmas skirts with my little girl?! Hopefully I still have enough fabric to cover these hips of mine! ha!
