12 Reasons Your Wife Spends too much at Hobby Lobby

So my hubby, Davis, always wonders why I spend so much TIME and MONEY at Hobby Lobby. And I always tell him, “Hello, its Hobby Lobby.”

His blank stare tell me he doesn’t understand the awesomeness he is missing out on.

So I thought I’d show him how MAGICAL Hobby Lobby is for like every female on the planet.

And this my friends is…

12 reasons your wife spends too much at hobby lobby || Hilarious but so TRUE!

12 Reasons Your Wife Spends too much at Hobby Lobby

A tale of one wife navigating her way through the craft store. Based on a true story.

hobby-lobby14

It all starts on a dark, cold winter’s night after a ROUGH day with the kids. Think kindergartener with the stomach bug, a teething toddler also with the stomach bug, and a preschooler with cabin fever. Oh and I haven’t showered in 2 days. Rough Day on the home front, mkay?

So I tell Davis I need to go get some beads for a bracelet that I’m making. He agrees and I do a happy dance in my head.

I hand the kids off to Davis as soon as dinner is done. Dinner {or what’s left of it} is literally everywhere and I am grabbing my purse to make an escape. I pull up to Hobby Lobby.

Happiness is inside.

Those orange letters attract women like lights attracts moths.

I grab a blue shopping cart because heaven knows, I always need one. Yes, I am here only for a few beads, but you never know what else I might find that I’ll need. So I want to be prepared.

hobby-lobby1

#1 Lots of New {cute} Products All the Time

First, I check the front end caps for new stuff. I am not disappointed! These cute signs are new. AND they’re 50% off. Score! The kids definitely need the “Teach me how to Share” sign. It goes in the cart. I’m tempted to snag the mason jar one as well, but its kinda creepy.

hobby-lobby3

#2 Everything is on Sale

Next, I swing by the floral section to see if there is a sale going on.

Surprise! There is. yay!

So I grab yet another faux succulent arrangements for Davis’s new office. This will be the 8th succulent arrangement I’ve bought for him now. He loves succulents. Especially ones he has to dust all the time. He’ll be so happy I thought of him while I was at Hobby Lobby.

I start heading to the back and pass the “Black and Gold” section.

hobby-lobby2

3. Trendy Products

HELLO handsome gold deer! Isn’t he fabulous?

Geez, I really need to get on the gold trend.

But gold doesn’t exactly go with my current decor.

I linger for a minute then begrudgingly move on towards the Jewelry section vowing to find a way to add gold into my decorating.

Ok, I need to go get those beads. And I magically have to pass the fabric section to get to the beads.

hobby-lobby11

4. Lots and Lots of Pretty Fabric

Oh the fabric section! Its like eye candy on bolts of cardboard.

It doesn’t matter if I don’t even know how to turn on my sewing machine, I NEED that pretty yellow floral fabric!

I could get lost in the fabric section for days.

But I rip myself away.

And then I see it. GASP!

hobby-lobby7

5. Organization up the Wazoo

Baskets are on sale! Baskets are on sale! If I had more baskets in my life, I’d be more organized. And at 50% off {see reason #2}, I can get 2 for the price of 1. Sold! Sign me up! I can always use more organization. There’s my craft room, my kitchen, the toy room, the master bedroom, the bathrooms, the family room. They ALL need more organization.

But I then remember I have a dozen unused, empty baskets at home.

I tell myself, ‘Well, these baskets are different, they’re cute. So I’ll actually use these ones.’

They go into the cart.

Ok, now I can see the jewelry section and there is no stopping me. I make it to the Jewelry end cap and…..

hobby-lobby4

6. Buy Items in hopes of Learning a New Skill

Oh, they have a huge selection of these fabulous pendants!!!

I’ve always wanted to learn how to cross stitch so I could stitch a tiny heart and put it on one of these pendant necklaces. Just like the one I saw on Pinterest.

Must buy it.

I am sure this pendant will inspire me to learn how to cross stitch.

Into the shopping cart it goes.

Super excited about my find and the new skill I will learn from it, I look around and notice that I am close to the mirror section.

hobby-lobby6

7. Cute Home Decor

Aw, Mirrors! I love mirrors! I have a thing for mirrors.

And Hobby Lobby has some of the best mirror around. Trust me.

Oh and they get new styles all the time. I’ll bet mirrors are on sale this week.

hobby-lobby8

But….. mirrors aren’t on sale this week. Sad face.

Well, at least I am not tempted to spend an arm and a leg on this ridiculously expensive adorable little mirror that measures all of maybe 12″.

So I make a face in the mirror and take a picture instead.

See Davis, I saved you $44.99 today! wahoo!

Mental Note: Snag that cute mirror when its 50% off next week.

Now I wonder if they have a clock that would go in the family room. And I’m off to the clock aisle!

hobby-lobby5

8. More Home Decor

Clocks are so fun!

They keep me on time….or somewhat relatively on time….ok, if 15 minutes late for everything counts as on time, then I’m on time all the time. Or something like that. I digress.

Look at the awesome rectangle one! I like that one. A lot. I think it might have to come home with me.

Oh wait, I think I have seen that clock before. Hmm, where have I seen it?

Oh YEAH! I have one just like it sitting in my front room patiently waiting for me to find the perfect spot to hang it. Its probably been there 6 months or so. Maybe longer.

Good thing I remembered that! Davis would never have let me live that one down!

Phew.

Moving on.

hobby-lobby10

9. Extra Craft Supplies, Just in Case

Aw, monograms. I can always use good a monogram. I like to keep a couple extra ones on hand, just in case.

You never know when a craft or wreath or wall or frame is going to need a monogram. Into the cart it goes.

Then I pass it….

hobby-lobby9

10. Huge Clearance Section

The pathway to {crafter} Heaven!

The clearance section is like a bottomless pit of awesomeness.

I could get lost in the Clearance section for hours!

But I resist the urge today.

Props to me! I might get out of Hobby Lobby in under an hour. That would be a Personal Record.

Davis will be so proud of me!

Hmm, anything else that I need while I’m here? I don’t want to forget anything…..

Maybe I should get a wreath form for my monogram.

hobby-lobby15

 11. Crafting Inspiration

I could make an adorable spring burlap wreath with it.

Grab the wreath form and B line for the cashier.

Until I see these insanely GINORMOUS flowers…..

hobby-lobby13

12. Random Items you Won’t see Anywhere else

To fully appreciate how insanely gigantic these flowers are, let’s take a selfie.

hobby-lobby12

That hydrangea has individual flowers the size of my head.  Umm, that’s ridiculous.

What would anyone do with these giant sized flowers? Stick them in their front yard with the pink flamingo?

I finally make it to the cashier and patiently wait as he manually rings up each item. {why don’t they have barcode scanners?! seriously people.}

I throw my bags into the back of my car and zip home as fast as I can. As I unload my purchases, I feel a little guilty for spending $100+. What did I spend it on anyways?

Then it hits me like a brick.

I forgot the dang beads!

Blast. How did I do that?

Well, I guess that means another trip to Hobby Lobby!

Oh darn.

Poor Davis.

Why do you spend so much at the craft store? What would you add to this list? I’d love to hear in the comments below!

LOL! my loving hubby will totally 100% with you… I spent too much when I went to Hobby Lobby. But one thing he always thankful for is we do not live close to one walking distance! LOL!!!

I have a Hobby Lobby 1.3 miles from the house…..1.3 ….yup! It’s a running house joke of why I know how far it is to Hobby Lobby or as my husband calls is H and L….! :) I had many a chuckle reading your post as I just purchased last week 2 baskets, a monogram, rummaged through Clearance section and all I was going for in the first place was a return of a glue/adhesive runner that was defective! Oh how I love my favorite store! :)

  4. 4

hey how’d you get inside my head when i go to hobby lobby? LOL!!!
    this. post. was. awesome.
i won’t blame you if you happen to forget your beads the 2nd time around…

  5. 5

I think we shop at the same store! (I promise I’m not a creepy stalker, just another Virginian) I do love a good sale and luckily my husband LOVES that I go into craft stores and do this. He pushes the cart and insists we go up and down all the aisles. :) This was such a fun post!

Aimee, you could make some good money if only you could figure a way of cloning that husband of yours. I’m sure there are plenty of women who would love a guy who, 1, loves that she spends big money at a craft store, and 2, insists upon scouring the entire store for a great find *with* her! Bake that man a cake! Or design for him something clever!

I am from Canada but this is on my list of to do’s when I make my next trip into the US I must visit Hobby Lobby.

lol So true, this post! One must have their ‘sale’s resistance’ on alert upon entering the front door!
In regard to the gynormous flowers always tempting -but confusing all who walk by them, I’ve seen them in a photo shoot used as one of the coolest backdrops for a party, turned upside down hanging from a ceiling as decoration for a summer wedding, and also in one freakishly large, but appropriate for the size of the room (ballroom) arrangements in an equally large vase. All three situations were stunning due particularly to the shock of the proportion! So next time you walk by them, you’ll think of this post *and* the next spring or summer party you’ll throw, and yes, you’ll be forced by reason to pile them into that now teensy tiny blue cart! My apologies to your husband and or your bank account. : )

I wish we had Hobby Lobby here in the UK, some of that stuff looks fabulous – I too love giant clocks and need one for the newly decorated living room. Plus I want, want, WANT some of those giant monograms!!

Giant flowers!?!?! Oh come on that one is easy I’ll have you back up there for some. Do you have a little girl? The possibilities are endless on room decor for little girls with those things (mother of 2 little girls)
Oh you don’t have little girls that’s ok do you take pics? There is nothing cuter than setting up a photo shoot with a new born with giant flowers or even a little girl, gives the Alice in Wonderland feel ; ) I love hobby lobby and I love this post!

    1. 9.1

LOL my little girl is only 18 months, so I had not thought of using them with her! Good ideas! Thanks for sharing, Lizzie! Now I’ll have to go back and get like 10! haha ;)

First I must convey the following sentiment from my husband to yours…”Brutha, I FEEL your pain!” Having said that, I have to tell you how much fun I had reading this post TO my husband!!! His first comments were along the lines of “WHEN did YOU start a blog????” ROFL!!!! We’ve spent the past ten minutes bantering back and forth about this post!!! His best comment was “Welcome to the 7 levels of Hobby Lobby Hell!!! We really needed this laugh!!! Thanks so much for sharing!!! BTW my hubs would go inside and spend as much time as I would if we didn’t have a small dog that HAS to go EVERYWHERE with us!!! So most days he ends up sitting in the car, with her, while I go into Hobby Lobby. LOL!!

You had me lol while sitting here reading your blog. Here in Montreal we do not have the luxury of having a Hobby Lobby but OMG it looks just wonderful!!! Since Target has gone belly up perhaps Hobby Lobby can move in….right next door to Micheals!! OMG!! They have wonderful stuff!! Being retired although not of pension age I can’t bring myself to spend lots of money on crafting supplies. However, hubby does come into Micheals on occasion and did help me find some yarn so I could make him a scarf….2 years later he is still waiting for it!!! shhhhh!! I made something for the grandkids with it!! He is wonderful though and wanders around like a lost soul and did buy me a $200 gift card for Christmas and my wonderful son gave me another $100 gift card so I can continue my craftiness aka I keep out of their hair!!! LOL!!! Men…got to love them! before retiring from my work, I often bought things for the although at the time, there was less available. Just looking at HL we still are missing many goodies including no fabric….Micheals doesn’t have any and there are no fabric stores around Hope you are all feeling better and over the stomach bug…hopefully winter will be over earlier than the predicted 6 weeks +

Wow…I completely understand! Between Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Joann’s, thrift shops, and yard sales…my craftiness is boundless! When I get to feed my lovely creativity…I am in the happiest place of all…the core of my beingness! So…although very thrifty in nature….I should have bought some stocks in these companies :D

  15. 15

This is so grea (and true)t! But don’t forget the Hobby Lobby savior…. the 40% coupon!!

So cute! Love this! My downfall (even though the section is usually small in HL) is the fabric remnants section. And more recently – the yarn. Ai, the yarn!

I try to escape and hit the wonderful, luxurious, sanity restoring world of Hobby Lobby as much as possible but alas my wonderful Husband knows how to read my crafty mind and (by the way he is addicted to that store like a crack addict, like 3 trillion times worse than me) is in the car waiting so he can go too!

I loved when you almost bought the clock and then realized you had one like it! I’ve done that myself. I live an hour from HLobby and only go with my husband No leisure shopping for me. I run like a banshee, not fun. Love the store.

Funny, UPS just dropped my Hobby Lobby order off at my back door!
I wish I could attach a photo, I’ve had one of the super-megahuge-daisy flowers in my livingroom for over a year now (weighted down-not an easy task-w/floral rocks, in a XL glass wine jug, placed on the seat of my old school desk that sits against the wall). I seriously have to drag myself away from buying a turquoise one…a pink one..and..so on, every time I’m in the store. Its the $14 cost that pulls me away, Cuz we all know if they took coupons like Joanns did…It would only cost $7 or less! I’m incredibly drawn to the massive size of items that are otherwise small.

What cracked me up was the comment about the dated cash registers! You’d think they could afford a POS from 2001 at least! Also it was nice to know other crafters buy items they “hope to learn” for inspiration, seeing as how my fiance won’t let me forget about the upper bungalow floor and spare room i have stocked w/not yet used craft supplies. I keep telling him I’ll have the best online, solo owner, craft supply store ever! Yup…one day I say.

Due to my adult ADHD I’m also constantly pulled and zig zagged around the store…in the past, I’ve been SO zombied out and exhausted…ive spent over 4hrs wandering around large craft stores and average a 2hr trip- They always think im stealing, i swear…so now i try to go when theres only one hour left to shop, with a long list! i just jog through the store, zig zagging and filling my cart faster.

Thanks for the fun read, I feel a touch more sane now!

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! This is SOOO ME! I love this post! I seem to have developed an unhealthy addiction to CRAFTS!!! I mean hey it could be SOOOOO much worse like I could be addicted to CRACK! KML!

  22. 22

I was seriously in need of a good chuckle tonight! It’s been a LONG week- a good one- but still long! It’s Thursday night and I taught Fine Arts and Photography to other people’s brats, oh, I mean ‘angels’ all day. I enjoy teaching- seeing the kids’ eyes light up when there is an ‘aha’ moment, and their quiet concentration (emphasis on quiet;) as they learn a new artistic skill. But I am TIRED!! A friend on FB shared your post, Linda, and while we don’t have “Hobby Lobby” in my part of Canada (they can come and give Michael’s, which doesn’t carry fabrics:( a run for their money anytime!!) I thoroughly enjoyed and totally identified with your explanation of why we NEED craft stores!! And can blow a tidy sum of money on artsy-fartsy projects!
I hope that as your children get older that you are able to have some ‘mommy’ time and use up some of the awesome craftsy stuff that you are accumulating. My kids are tweens and teens now- and now my daughter is joining me in my vice: watching the boob-tube. And my redemption for that ‘vice’: my hands are always busy with some craftsy project, i.e. off-loom beading, on-loom beading, wire-work, knitting, sewing, zendoodling etc. etc. etc.:) And of course, one of our favorite mother-daughter outings is, yep, to the crafts store, to find more crafts supplies:)

I have come to the conclusion that Hobby Lobby does something to the air in the store. Much like being in a Las Vegas casino where there are no clocks and pumped full of oxygen – I lose all sense of time while in that store. You go in for one little thing and the next thing you know the cashier is telling you your total is $100+. It’s crazy! I have to go in at least once a week just to make sure I am not missing anything -lol!

  24. 24

I only wish we had a hobby lobby around here so I could spend a lot of money :)

I had the INSANE pleasure of working at a Hobby Lobby! I loved it. I appreciated the fact that they closed at an hour that allowed you to get home and have a little time to yourself and your family before bedtime, and especially appreciated that they were closed on Sundays so that I could not just go to church; I could help teach Sunday school classes as well. AND have the rest of the day with my family and time to work on my crafts!
Oh, and did I mention that I worked in the Jewelry department? Yes, it’s really a small form of torture dividing the prices of various priced beads in half and then adding them all up, plus check out what else is on sale in the store and calculating if there will really be anything left of the paycheck to bring home!
I haven’t worked there for years now. But my hubby knows if he’s trying to get me to do something he wants to do, he gets a lot farther if he slips in, “I’ll take you to Hobby Lobby first…”

I do not live near a Hobby Lobby so when I do get there I tend to stock up and on numerous occasions glad I have. My daughter just made a super awesome valentine box from my craft supplies. Some stuff I had completely forgot about but boom there it was and worked perfect for her box. Love Hobby Lobby!

How I wish we had such a store in my country. I’m sure I’d never spend there less than 3 hours! Seriously, looking at those pictures increased my heart rate. Envy on my side. :)

I love this post!! So cute and so true. I go there way too often. It’s on my list for tomorrow actually. I am not sure where I shopped before we had a HL. My husband realized I went in there too often when he went one day and the cashier asked where my children were. :) Happy HL shopping!!

When my friend first suggested HL to me, years ago, I SPENT TWO HOURS IN THERE. Now, I live within 3mi of one and am in there nearly everyday. I do photography, bridal flowers, painting, woodcrafts, etc and shop for home decor. Often, I’m there straight from work and feel the staff is whispering, “There’s that lady in the scrubs again!” Got married in Dec, was there almost daily selecting wedding items. I feel I need a key or they should allow me overnight camping rights. LOL Best Store Ever!

I love Hobby Lobby and have been begging them to open up a store near me. I just found out we are getting one next year. Yippi. It will still be 45 minutes away but that’s better than the 1 1/2 hours it takes to get there now. Hobby Lobby has a time warp system in place. You lose all track of time and the reason you went there in the first place. When you wake up you are surrounded by new crafting goodies.

  32. 32

I HAD to share this with my mom. She calls Hobby Lobby her happy place. She loves the music and that it’s just a calm and pleasant place to be. Even as I type this she is going on about the baskets!

My husband read this with me and laughed and said “this is why I let you go alone you drive me nuts in craft stores” that being said I always some how find myself in the counted cross stitch section or the yayarn section as well! Kids crafts too as I am trying to find crafts for my kids to do. Well than there is paper crafts and stamps!

FYI in regards to the sales. If an item is not on sale in the store you can print out their weekly coupon which is usually 40 to 50% off. So you never have to pay full price. GOD BLESS HOBBY LOBBY!!!

LOVE this post!! The only thing worse than running up there to shop is working there and shopping on your break or when you get off or on your day off……. My boys swear I could open my very own Hobby Lobby! I don’t work there any more but it was hard to bring home a pay check for sure!

We need a Hobby Lobby in Peterborough UK! Or, anywhere in the UK, to be honest. Looks like so much fun, I’d be just as bad as you for spending on a whim, cos making things is an itch that just needs to be scratched

Thanks for this post, Linda! The closest HL to me is 1 1/2 hours away and it’s near the airport (Pittsburgh). Any time that we have to go to the airport, my husband knows that there is a trip to Hobby Lobby involved and to plan accordingly! I love it if we have to drive one of the kids there for a flight, because I know that I will have TWO trips–one for the flight and one for the return flight (even better if they are a week apart thus putting me in two different sales periods) lol! You didn’t even visit the many Scrapbooking aisles! That’s usually where I go first, especially when they have the packs of cards or paper pads 1/2 off! Plus, as we are so far away, our local newspaper doesn’t carry the ad, so I have downloaded the HL app to my phone (and, my husband will download it only when we actually go to the store and removes it right after he checks out)! It’s like he would lose his “man card” if anyone would happen to see it on his phone!

    1. 41.1

I love it! And I love how you try to squeeze two sale cycles out of it! lol

  42. 42

I loved this!! It sounds so like what I do when I go to Hobby Lobby!! I laughed the whole way through the store with you!! :)
