Happy Tuesday! Are you ready for another fun Halloween craft? {if you missed my DIY Apothecary Jar or Boo bucket? make sure to check them out!} I absolutely love this cute little witch hat. It turned out so stinkin cute!
Witch Hat
I love me some polka dots! So I thought some white polka dots would make a fun look for this funky mini witch hat I made for Michaels on behalf of DecoArt. It got the most votes in the Halloween category on DecoArt’s website. yay!
Halloween Craft
Polka Dot Witch Hat Tutorial
Supplies:
- paper mache witch hat from Michaels
- DecoArt Black Gloss Enamels
- DecoArt White Gloss Enamels
- feathers
- halloween ribbon
- hot glue gun
- vinyl {scraps work great}
- 3/4″ circle paper punch
- Paint the paper mache witch hat with 2-3 coats of White Gloss Enamels. I cheated and used a hair dryer to help the paint dry quicker between coats. Make sure the paint it thoroughly dry.
- Use the circle hole punch to cut circles from the vinyl.
- Then apply the vinyl circles to the witch hat in an even polka dot pattern.
- Paint another coat of white Gloss Enamels over the polka dots to help seal the edges and prevent the black from leaking into the polka dots.
- Then paint 2 coats of Black Gloss Enamels over the hat allowing to dry between coats. {again, I used my hair dryer to speed things up a bit}
- Remove the vinyl dots.
- Use a hot glue gun to apply a couple coordinating Halloween ribbons around the crown of the witch hat.
- Hot glue a couple feathers at the crown of the hat.
- Then hot glue a big bow over the ends of the feathers to complete the look and you have a cute little witch hat to decorate with this Halloween!
Have you started your Halloween crafts? If so, what have you made?
happy crafting,
Linda

Although I’m not ready for summer to end, Halloween is my favorite holiday so I am really enjoying your Halloween crafts. I really like the witch’s hat and I’m thinking of dozens of way to decorate the hat. I love the glossy look of the paint and the simple but high impact the dots provide. I guess a trip to the craft store is in my near future!
Thanks, Jen! Halloween is one of my fave holidays too. As soon as August hits, I’m already thinking black and orange. haha Thanks for stopping by!
happy crafting,
Linda

I love this! I saw the lil hats at Michaels and seriously thought about buying one the other day.
I love FALL and would love to make leaves in all the autumn colors.
SO CUTE! I love this!
This is so cute. My classroom is polka dot this year so it will look adorable. I like to cheat and do things the fast way so I was wondering if it would work to paint it black first and then just use white vinyl dots over the black paint. Do you think the dots will fall off? Please let me know if you already tried this way. Thanks again, I love it and love your website. I love that there are others out there that I can relate to. :)
Hi Connie,
If you wanted to use white vinyl dots, I’d recommend using a matte black paint so that the vinyl adhered better. The glossy paint is a little slick and after a while, it will pop off on the rounded portions of the hat. {I found this out while using the dots as a stencil. They stuck fine for 5 mins, but then part of them would peel up. So I had to be careful and paint fast!}
Hope this helps!
thanks so much! can’t wait to try it.
Love the hat! You have inspired me! Thanks!
Awesome! Love to hear that! Thanks for stopping by, Connie!

Hey Linda! Thank you for all the inspiration! I love this site and this hat! My quesiont for you is how did you get your ribbon to lay down so nicely? Mine seems to want to ride up the hat and I can’t seem to get it snug around the brim. Any tips? Thanks again for all the great ideas! Jen
These polka dot witch hats were so much fun to make with my two granddaughters on their fall school break. They loved how shiny they turned out, just forgot the feathers, so another trip to Michaels for us 3. Thanks bunches!
Awesome, Kim! What a fun project to do with your granddaughters! I’m glad you enjoyed the tutorial. Thanks for stopping by and letting me know! I appreciate that!
