Craft Closet Tour from Gwenny Penny

Today we have Gwen here to give us a tour of her awesome Craft Closet. Enjoy! -Linda

Hey, everybody! I’m Gwen, and I blog over at Gwenny Penny. I’m a full-time mom of two little girls, and I love sewing, crafting, and just about everything creative. I blog in order to make sure that I carve out some creative time just for me each week.

I’m happy to be sharing my creative space here on Linda’s blog today. Back in January, my husband and I remodeled one of our closets into my very own sewing space. I couldn’t be happier with it. It’s small, so I need to keep things picked up and put away, but it beats having to hall out the sewing machine and all of my supplies every time I want to work on a project. When we were making plans, I never imagined it would turn out this great…

I love it! Let me take you on a little tour of my sewing closet. The outer shelf cubbies  along the ceiling hold my craft, sewing, and decorating books. The two center cubbies hold boxes filled with buttons, elastic, glues, scrapbook paper, paints, glue guns, and paper punches. The very top shelf holds all of my pillow forms, polyfil, and baskets full of extra supplies. It’s kind of nice because that area is sort of hidden from view from outside the closet. Under the desktop are three rolling carts with drawers. This is where all of my fabric, interfacing, and batting reside.

This is the desktop area…

The jars on the desk are filled with ribbon, zippers, ric rac, Sharpies, glue sticks, pens, and pencils. I also have a little notepad cube and pin cushion. It normally is not this neat :) There are usually much bigger piles of fabric to the left, as well as whatever projects I’m currently working on.

My pegboard holds my scissors, rotary cutters, bias tape maker, rulers, embroidery hoops, twine, small spools of ribbon, a clipboard for jotting down ideas, and my little wooden palm tree (a year-round reminder of the beach).

Here’s the view to the left…

The little clothesline displays some of my oldest daughter’s artwork. I told her that this was the one space in the house that is entirely mine, but she still managed to weasel her way into my closet :)

Here’s a closer look at the decorations on the wall, including this old Hasbro Necchi Supernova toy sewing machine I found last fall…

… and my vintage Fisher Price Little People woman at her sewing machine. Love her…

I also have a framed printable that I really like. I found “Get Excited and Make Things” through Alissa at 33 Shades of Green. It’s a free printable from Pretty Procrastination which can be found here (in four different colors!).

I also have a ginormous button that I bought at JoAnn’s last fall, and two little embroidery hoops with pieces of some of my favorite Heather Ross fabrics in them. I made the “grow” embroidery hoop last spring, and there is a tutorial for that project on my blog.

And now the view to the right…

All of my thread is stored on the rack on the wall. The number 4 vintage marquee number was an Etsy purchase a while back. I also have my scrappy pin cushion and my log cabin mug rug that I made. And in the very back corner of the desktop is a little wooden box with drawers for storing more sewing tools. On top is this cute little metal sewing machine and some thimbles that I’ve had since I was little…

This is a great way to carve out your own creative space when you don’t have a lot of extra room in your home. If you are interested in making something like this in your home, check out my post on the build process. And if you have any questions, please feel free to email me. I’m certainly not an expert, but I can tell you what worked for us.

Thanks for checking out my sewing closet, and I hope you’ll come visit soon over at Gwenny Penny. I’d love for you to check out some of my favorite projects. Thanks so much for having me today, Linda!

This is adorable. I admit, i have more space than this to craft in, but my little basement craft room is dark and cold. Not very inspirational. You’re so lucky to have such a pretty, cozy space in which to make things =)

I totally have a craft closet too. And have to drag my sewing machine to the dining room table for any projects! :(

Great closet and use of space. Have to show this one to some of my friends who are “space challenged” for craft space.

Great space and just the type of thing I’ve been looking for. I’m saving your post to show my hubby to see what we can do. Now If i can just get all that stuff out of the closet – not as easy as it sounds, but I’m going to give it my best shot. Thanks for the great blog.

LOVE your space. (thankful you can’t look into the computer and see my messy space right now – I’ve been slinging fabric like a crazy woman). I especially love all your little fun personal items – the little peope sewing lady is my FAV!

I LOVE this space! I want my closet to look like that.

When I was a young mom I had a niche much like this (not as beautifully organized though!). Now that I’m a grandma I have 2 whole (very small) rooms devoted to all my crafty pursuits, but I still have fond memories of my tiny, well lit closet sewing “room”. I had a florescent light hanging in there and KaPow, it was bright!

I absolutely LOVE your space! I googled “Sewing closet” and looked at images, and this is the one I want to try and personalize into my own in my little closet! I have two questions… is your table just setting on top of the organization drawers? Or is it installed somehow? And, when working – do you feel that it is just enough table space to work with? I’m excited for my new space! And thank you for the inspiration!!

this is SSSOOOO totally what I need. This is the second closet I’ve seen done like this, so now I have TWO pics to show my hubby and say “SEE, THIS is what I want” he’ll have no excuses now :) great job!

LOVE this. We’re in the process of building a new house and my sewing/guest room is the smallest room in the house. Even with a futon for the bed and a dresser, there’s just not going to be a lot of extra space. I’m going to put my sewing area into my closet like you did and will make it look tidy and be more efficient! Am planning on adding a dresser next to it to put a table top ironing board on to and to store extra fabric/supplies. Thanks for the inspiration!

What an awesome giveaway! I love the idea of seeing what you have and being able to access it. At first, it looked like you lifted the top which would make no sense whatsoever, but the drawers are awesome. One of my favorite things to do is look at all of the goodies that I have and seeing more of it, especially right in front of me, would be such an amazing way to stay inspired!

My tip would be making things easy to access…the further things are from your fingertips, the further they’ll be from your mind! =D
