DIY Pallet Wood Sign Mother’s Day Gift Idea

This month’s Michael’s Makers Challenge theme was Mother’s Day. I live thousands of miles away from my mom, so sometimes its difficult to make something for her that can ship easily {and that I haven’t already given her!}. But I am really excited about this DIY Pallet Wood Sign I made for my mom for Mother’s Day this year!

You are Loved from All Over the Country || DIY Wood Pallet Sign that makes a fantastic Mother's Day gift idea!

I painted the map of the United States of America onto a pallet wood sign and then glued on felt hearts where all my siblings live. As you can see, we are all pretty spread out! It took me about 45 minutes to make this sign.

This sign will ship easily, so I’m excited to send it to my mom. Which, btw, I can’t believe Mother’s Day is only about 1 month away! eek! These Spring Holidays are lumped together this year.

Supplies:

pallet

This is the pre-made pallet wood sign from Michaels. Its reasonably priced, especially with a coupon! And saved me some time from building it. Plus, its lighter and thinner than if I had made my own with pallet wood. So I will save on shipping cost. Its a win-win buying it pre-made vs. making it!

stain-wood

  1. First I stained the pallet sign with Early American Stain and wiped off the excess. Allow stain to dry thoroughly.

2. Then I cut a vinyl stencil of the USA using my Silhouette CAMEO.

3. The vinyl didn’t stick to the rough pallet wood very well, but it worked fine because I wanted a white washed look. So I used a dry brush technique and carefully dabbed it on around the edges of the stencil.

4. Then I cut out tiny {about 1/2″} red felt hearts and hot glued them onto the pallet wood sign where each of my mom’s kids live.

Does the wood have to be stained before you paint it? I have a raw cedar wood pallet from Michael’s and love the color as is, but I am wondering if being unstained would mess with the lettering when I paint it on. Can I leave it raw or is there some sort of clear stain I would need to use? Thanks!

And thanks for all the crafting tips! I just discovered your website and can’t wait to improve my crafting skills!

I love anything made with pallets; unfortunately, my wife doesn’t as much as me. :) I usually use tracing over top a printout of the design with a pencil, since I don’t have a way to make a stencil. It usually works well unless there is a lot of detail. The map design would be fun to do with my kids to mark places to where we have traveled.
