XOXO Canvas TUTORIAL + Free PRINTABLE!!

{happy monday!} hope you survived the weekend….and got lots of crafting done! i got a couple valentine’s day crafts done and i can’t wait to share them with you this week! first off, here’s a quick tutorial for my v-day canvas from my mantel. simple, easy, and oh-so-lovable :)

How To Make  Your Own Canvas

supplies: canvas {mine is 11×14} , red spray paint, vinyl, digital cutting tool {i used my CAMEO} or exacto knife, white spray paint {optional}.

diy canvas decor

1. i did a quick coat of white spray paint to make sure my canvas was solid white, but this is optional.

2. cut out your design onto vinyl. i used my Silhouette CAMEO TM with Ariel font and a heart shape to create my XOXO design. remove extra vinyl leaving the letters.

3. transfer vinyl letting to your canvas. canvas is kind of slick, so it can be a little tricky to transfer. go slowly and do one letter at a time.

4. spray paint your canvas red. try to get good coverage with 1 coat because the vinyl may curl with additional coats.

5. after the paint has dried, simply peel away the vinyl and you’re left with a great looking love day decoration!

I love this! Thanks for the tutorial. I am wondering if there is any reason you could not spray paint the entire canvas red and then, using the Silhouette vinyl, apply the letters using white vinyl. I have a painted canvas I am trying to repurpose and I don’t have white spray paint to cover it with before doing it using your method. So do you think the vinyl letters will stick well to it, and would I then need to seal it with anything? Thanks for your help!

      Hi Lila,
      You could use white vinyl on the canvas, but vinyl doesn’t stay adhered to canvas very well. It will pop off in places over time and you will constantly be smoothing it out. Canvas material is rather slick. {not sure why, but it is!}
      thanks for stopping by!

Hi all…tonight I tried using this method to transfer a vinyl stencil to canvas only to end up with a big sticky mess. The vinyl simply would not stick to the canvas. Any tips?

    1. 19.1

      Hi Alicia,
I had the same problem, but if you spray paint 2 coats of white {or other color} before you try to stick the vinyl, it transfers much easier! You can also try using spray adhesive on the canvas to make it sticky.
      Hope that helps!
      happy crafting,
      Linda
