easy halloween mummy TUTORIAL

From your comments on yesterday’s post, the consensus was my mummies were more “ghosts of mummies past” {in Claire’s words} than mummies. LOL I agree. They did look like 1/2 ghosts, 1/2 mummy. I loved Wendy’s suggestion of “dirtying” them up with ink to make them look older and more mummy-ish. {thanks for the comments and suggestions, ladies!} So I took an ink pad to my mummies this morning so let’s see if you think they look more “mummy-ish” today……

Mummy Craft

what do you think? better with a little “dirt”? i thought so too!

these little mummies would be a great craft for the kids to help with {with supervision, of course!}. AND an easy and inexpensive craft for craft groups or Super Saturday events.

this is what they look like without ink….

so are you ready to see how i made these super easy and inexpensive little mummy-ghosts? here’s how…..

SUPPLIES

2×4 wood {you’ll need 6″ in length for each one}

white spray paint

25mm googley eyes

cheesecloth

glue gun

wood saw

brown ink

1. cut your 2×4 wood into 6″ pieces. {this is a great project for those left over pieces of 2×4’s from other projects! you could do different lengths for a fun variation}

2. paint your 2×4 pieces white. this will take a couple coats of paint. be sure to let the paint dry between coats.

3. heat up your glue gun and cut your cheesecloth into 1.5″ strips.{i used about 8-10 strips per mummy ghost}

4. starting at one end of the wood, wrap cheesecloth strips around and glue in place. be sure to overlap the cheesecloth so you can’t see the wood through it.

*TIP: if your kiddos are helping you make these, you could very easily let the kids wrap all the cheesecloth strips around the mummy without using hot glue because the cheesecloth will stick to itself. you could then add the hot glue later to secure the cheesecloth in place.

5. when you get to the end of one strip of cheesecloth, start the next. i used about 8 strips of cheesecloth to cover the body.

6. when your wood is completely covered, glue down the top strips, as shown.

7. glue 2 googley eyes in place at the top. *if children are helping, please supervise closely or do this step for them so that those cute little fingers don’t get burnt!

8. then take 1 more strip of cheese cloth and wrap around the eyes to hide them a little.

9. use your ink to add a little dirt to the edges.

DIY wood mummy

add these spooky little guys to your Halloween decor! so easy and so cute, they’re scary. right?? aren’t these a great use for all those stubby 2×4 scraps you have :)

happy crafting,

Linda

    Love them! I usually make some cards and scrapbook pages using drywall tape as my wrap. I do the ink trick too, it helps to separate the layers a little so you get more depth in your texture. Love the idea to use the 2×4’s! Oh and on a side note….I thought they looked really cute as ghosts too! lol. Thanks for sharing!

    Claire,
    These are so cute. I like them white and inked. Maybe combined they could be younger and older! LOL
    My grandson who will be three in December wants to be a “not scary ghost” for Halloween. I have been planning a costume to make.
    He is obsessed right now with cemeteries. My mother is State Vice Reagent for DAR and my husband has been trying to get information for her on his side of family. He took Henry to cemetery with him and he thought it was so cool. Can you imagine, I think it is so funny.

    I will put together a little tutorial if costume turns out cute and share. Thank you for your tutorial.

    At first, I was thinking they were made from empty cake mix boxes or something similar. I think this might work too. Maybe wrap it in white paper, like a present first? They are super cute. I like them ‘dirty’ too. Thanks for the ideas!

    I’m thinking instead of wood you could use boxes. I have some boxes in my pantry that are almost empty, I’m going to use those. Saves me a trip to the hardware store.

  22. 23

    These are adorable. They’d be cute out in the yard, too, except the sprinklers would get them. Maybe just on Halloween night? Soooo cute. Love, love.

  23. 24

    Love them. Great idea for those leftover pieces of wood.

    I love your ghost / Mummy project! I am wondering about the inking part. Do you use a ink pad or the refill bottle, and how do you apply it. Where can you find the brown ink?
    I was also wondering if you could tea dye the cheese cloth before making the mummy.
    I can’t wait to make one or more of these projects.
    Thanks for all of your great ideas / So glad I found your site on Skip To My Lou where your mason jar project was featured.

      Hi Vickie,
      I used an ink pad. I used one of the Ranger distress ink pads I found at Michaels. To apply, I just rubbed across the mummy and around the edges. But you could very easily tea dye the cheesecloth! That would be a very fun effect as well.
      I’m so glad you found me! I look forward to seeing you around Craftaholics Anonymous!
      happy crafting,

    Hi Linda! :)
    We tried out your mummies! So cute! We just used strijps of white fabric. Tied it around the top and just wrapped it around & tied around the bottom and tuck in any extra. So we didn’t have to use a glue gun. Even my 2 year old made one! So cute. Thanks for sharing! Linking back to you on my blog today. :)
    Have a happy Halloween!

    I actually made these mummies for a class Halloween party out of juice boxes! I covered the juice boxes with white duct tape, then used the layers of cheese cloth to wrap the box and secured with glue and added the eyes in between the strips. They turned out great! I got so many compliments on them and the kids LOVED them! Great idea for party decor!

      That’s awesome, Cynthia! Love the white duct tape idea. Very clever! Thanks for stopping by!
