DIY St. Patrick’s Day Mantel & Decor
Happy Thursday! If you’re not in the St. Patty’s Day mood, you will be after this most! First, I’m going to show off my mantel decor for St. Patrick’s Day and then show you how to make a canvas look like a paint chip sample with a fun twist. Oh, and because it is Giveaway Thursday, I got a giveaway for you…..and each of you get one!
Paint chip crafts are still so popular and hey, who doesn’t love a little ombre in their life, right? So I made a larger than life “Paint Chip” canvas and played up the paint names with a Irish theme. Festive? for sure!
I added in a little yellow and orange to break up the multiple hues of green for a fresh, modern look. {i think the lemons and apples help with the fresh look. ha!} I used layers green, fun textures, and funky prints. I found that adorable frame on clearance for a few dollars. so stinkin cute, right?
And you may recognize the fabric from my Dining Room Chairs. Great way to use those scraps!
How to Make a Paint Chip Canvas
supplies:
- canvas {mine is 24″x30″}
- 4 different colors of paint {i used spray paint for a nice even coat, plus easy application}
- 1″ painters or masking tape
- white craft paint {optional}
- butcher’s paper
- 1.5″ white vinyl lettering {i cut mine with my CAMEO}
Determine which order you’d like your paints.
- Apply 3 strips of tape across your canvas. If you’re using a 24×30 canvas like mine, the first tape will be 6.75″ from the top, the second will be 14.5″ from the top, and the third will be 22.25″ from the top.
- make sure you wrap the tape all the way around the sides to the back.
- Cut a long piece of butcher paper and put tape on the 2 short edges and tape over the tape you applied in Step 2 so that only one section is showing. Spray paint the section in the chosen color. I did 2-3 coats of paint for even color. Move the tape to the next section as needed so that again, the only canvas exposed is the one you are painting.
- My tape leaked a little, so I used white craft paint to touch it up with a small brush.
- Cut out names for the paint colors in white vinyl. I used Arial font and cut the vinyl with my Silhouette CAMEO.
- Apply your vinyl letters to your canvas. NOTE: normally vinyl does not stick well to canvas. canvas material is slick and its hard to get the vinyl to grab it. BUT after a couple coats of spray paint, my vinyl letters transferred like a charm to my canvas!
So there you have my St. Patty’s Day mantel with a Paint Chip Canvas. I think it looks rather swell, if I do say so myself!

Hey, I tried to print off the St Patty’s Day Printable & It won’t print right….you can’t see all the names of the paint colors. It’s like it’s cut in half. :( I hope this can be fixed because it’s super cute! Thanks for always having such an awesome blog! I follow it religiously!
That’s what happened to me, too! Only half of the paint chip printed.
I’m so sorry, Angela! I fixed it and you can print it off here: http://www.box.com/s/epgscfv9l0ovgizeky81 If you have any more problems printing it, please let me know.

I love your huge paint chip! That is such a creative idea.
I absolutely LOVE this idea! Paint chips have to be one of my favourite things to craft with (I just started a blog in February and have already shared 3 paint chip projects . . . did you know you can cut them with your Silhouette?!) and this lets you have all the fun on a much larger scale. I’m already trying to think of a way to use this AMAZING tutorial for something after St. Patrick’s Day. Thanks for sharing the fun printable, too!
Pinning right now :)
