Pinecone Monster Halloween Wreath Tutorial

Love this Halloween Monster Wreath made with pinecones. The texture is perfect!

DIY Monster Halloween Wreath

Yay for October! That means I can FINALLY put my Monster Wreath on my front door! I had the idea to use pinecones to create a monster Halloween wreath for over a month now, but I’ve been so busy helping with Davis’s new dental office here in Chesterfield, VA that I just barely had a chance to make it! But I’m so excited to show him off! I wanted to create a monster wreath for Halloween that had some fun texture. So I thought and thought about materials that had fun texture and when I saw a pinecone on the ground, I knew that was the perfect material to use for my Monster wreath!

Halloween door - Monster Wreath, Boo vinyl decal, pumpkins, and mums. So easy, so cute!Mr. Green Monster is definitely on the cute side of spooky! He turned out so fun with his festive bow tie and wonky eyes. Oh and did I mention, he’s really heavy? I was surprised at how heavy a pinecone wreath can be! Granted I did use HUGE pinecones I found at the park, but still. Lots heavier than you would think. So if you make this wreath, definitely use a wreath hanger on your door or something that can handle a heavy wreath.

Pinecone monster Halloween Wreath idea. Super cute and easy DIY wreath! The texture is awesome. I started my photo shoot of Mr. Green Monster and decided my door needed some Halloween vinyl. So I whipped up this simple ‘Boo!’ design in Silhouette Studio and cut it out with my Silhouette CAMEO. All in a matter of minutes. {Check out more about it on my Instagram!}

Have an Old Christmas Pinecone Wreath that has seen better days? This would be perfect for it! Give it new life and turn it into a Halloween Monster Wreath!

How to Make Pinecone Monster Wreath

Supplies:

  • 12″ found foam wreath form
  • Pinecones, in a variety of sizes
  • 2 – 2″ smooth round foam balls
  • Black Marker
  • Green Spray Paint {I used almost an entire can}
  • Hot Glue gun with lots of extra glue sticks
  • 6″ x 18″ piece of Orange Fabric
  • 3″ Black and White striped ribbon
  • White foam board
  • Scissors

pinecone wreath tutorial 1. First you’ll glue your pinecones to your wreath form. Attach the large pinecones first and then fill in with the small and medium pinecones. Tip: I put my very largest pinecones around the outer edge. DIY pinecone wreath 2. This is what your wreath should look like at this point. Notice that you can see the white wreath form a little bit and that’s ok. After the next step, you won’t see notice it anymore.

3. Place your pinecone wreath on cardboard or a large piece of kraft paper and completely cover the entire wreath with green spray paint. It took about 3 coats and almost the entire can of spray paint to cover my pinecone wreath.

NOTE: While I was doing this, I wondered if it would have been faster/easier to just paint dip the entire wreath in a bucket of paint. If you have the paint and a big enough container to do that, I would love to hear how it worked for you!monster eye 4. While the last coat of paint is drying on your pinecones, use a black marker and draw eyeballs on the 2 foam balls. I did my black eyeballs different sizes for a bit of a goofy look.

5. Using scissors, cut out 3 teeth from the white foam board. Mine are all different sizes.

6. Make a bow tie with the fabric. To do this, I folded the fabric in half with right sides together so that it measured about 6″ x 9″. Then I sewed around the 3 sides leaving a 3″ hole. Then I turned it right side out, hot glued the hole shut. Then I wrapped the black and white ribbon around the center and hot glued in place. {sorry I didn’t get a picture of this step! I had to redo the bow tie and forgot to take pictures of the one that worked.}

7. Place the eyeballs, bow tie, and teeth on the wreath and then hot glue them in place.

More Ideas: I’m sure there are all kinds of fun variations you could do on this wreath. Here’s a few I had: You could use purple spray paint instead of green. Give him 3 eyes or just 1 eye. Or make it a girl instead of a boy by putting the bow on top instead of the bottom of the wreath. Just some fun ideas to help you get started on making it your own!
