Ideas for Storing Fabric

{happy friday!} Was organization one of your New Years resolutions this year? Well, today I’m going to share a few ideas for Fabric Storage and Organization to help you achieve your organized resolution even in the craft room or where ever you get your craft on!

Fabric Storage

This is how I store my fabric in my craft room:

ideas for storing fabric

In my craft room I hung a curtain rod {from Ikea} on the wall and then used curtain rings {you know, the circles with little clips on them} to hang my fabric. Be sure to secure your curtain rod in studs because fabric can be heavy! {this rod may or may not have fallen down in a big heap of colorful threads…. yes, we learned the hard way lol} I like having my fabric out where I can see it and remember all the different prints I have. Plus I think there are less wrinkles being hung vs being folded.

organizing craft supplies

For smaller pieces of fabric and a couple bolts of fabric, Davis made the white piece from an old book shelf we found for free on the side of the road. yeah, you can’t beat FREE!!

Davis used particle board to make additional cubbies in different sizes. {which is soooo convenient for different sizes of scraps} and then painted it white.

Lovely! Your craft room looks a bit like a fabric store:) And an awesome one at that!

Thank you, Linda! Organizing my fabric stash is high on my list of things to get done in January. I’m off to a good start, but these ideas will help me tremendously!

I have a very small craft room (7.5ft X 8.5ft), without a real closet. Hanging storage would be nice, but it’s not possible in my room. I have a cabinet that I store all my craft supplies in. I store my fabric the same was Smashed Peas and Carrots does. I got the idea from her, and ran with it. I also went crazy with my scrap pile. I cut a comic board in half, and made mini-mini bolts for my scraps. Now they are in bins on one shelf instead of all over on six shelves. Once I got my scraps all contained, I realized how many scraps I really have! Let the scrapbusting projects begin! Thanks for sharing the other ideas.

I love this. So organized. In addition, it creates it’s own art on display. Completely random, I received an email thins morning about IKEA having a BYOF (Bring your own friend) day tomorrow. Giveaways, free breakfast, and other fun things. Maybe I will head over to win the curtain rod…among other things. Even the kids love it, so the fact that dad’s at station won’t be too big of a deal. (hmm…devising a plan) Thanks for the awesome tip!

Cool ideas. I copied/modified an idea I saw on pinterest to do mine. We are military so we move every couple years so a “permanent” solution like this wouldn’t work for us. I saw an idea that used foam core board cut into “mini-bolts” and then fabric was wrapped around the bolts. I couldn’t justifying that much foam core – so I cut up a bunch of boxes that we had in the garage and then I store them in plastic tubs – grouped by color/types of fabric.

So pretty! And functional, what could be better? :) An organized space seems way more encouraging to craft than a cluttered one where I don’t even want to dig into my supplies :( Great job with the bookcase, wouldn’t have guessed you customized a (free) one! Awesome!

I am a brand new reader. And to be honest, I have combed through your site for about a week (bed ridden due to medical issues) but I have made my sister promise to take me to Jo-Anns and other such places so that I might get started on some of these fantastic ideas. I have saved a bunch of the ideas but there are just so many I would like to try. Thank you for this fantastic site! You are truly amazing. Being an avid scrapbooker I am looking to move onto bigger and brighter crafts. Thank you for being so fantastic and sharing your ideas.

This is really lovely! I so needed this post!! I have 4 of those bookcases and will be moving in a few weeks and I want cubbies so bad but there really expensive! So you’re helping me out big time because I’m going to use two for my crafts and two for my girls toys!! I got a couple questions tho did you cut end of the book case off or did you just move the board down more? For the shelves did your hubby make them removable or did he nail em/screw them in? Now I’m excited!! And I can’t wait to get organized using what we have and making it better! Thank you again! I love your blog! :)

did you get the rod holders at ikea too? I can’t seem to find them. I really like the way that looks. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Hi Melissa,
Yes, Ikea was where I found them :) I’m glad you stopped by!
      happy crafting,

I did a slightly different take on the curtain rod. The local big box home store had 6) 1 1/4″ diameter rod sets on sale for 5$ each. 2 were 8′ long and the rest were 4′ long. I hung them on the wall and draped the fabric over them. I hope to find two more so I can roll the velvet onto them. For pattern storage, the big box office supply store had some 19L plastic boxes from the “Really Useful Box” company. The patterns went into 9 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ manilla envelopes with the pattern envelope stapled to the outside. They fit perfectly in the box and all my pattern envelopes are now the same size.

Hi Linda. Oh’ how I love organization, not that I’m where I want to be. lol. You’ve done a great job. I have mine on mini bolts but really love the non-creasing way you have yours hung for clip rings. It looks beautiful. I’m a fabric geek.

    Hugs…Tracy

    Um…
“For smaller pieces of fabric and a couple bolts of fabric…”

What’s on the curtain rod already appear to qualify as “remnants” as it is. Those don’t look bigger than half a yard! A single piece of the fabric in my stash could make a set of curtains for my big picture window.

    1. 26.1

      Hi Mackenzie,
All pieces of fabric on my curtain rod are 1-3 yards each. I currently have around 70 yards hanging on it right now.
      thanks,
      Linda

Wow, I have tons of fabric, craft stuff, drawing till the moon starts to draw. It has been years, needless to say I can’t make my self start. I seem to be scared of failure. I have had a few surgeries well more than… I use to love, now my room has turned into a very scary place. Use to you dive in and mistakes were a new invention wow factor an oh yes meant to do that… Stick with it even if to mix and match for a something or else. You have given me the courage to start a plaster something right now walking in there grabbing substrate and compound. What could go wrong. If this makes no sense I’m sorry. Thank You Linda. Sincerely Tammy
