Hearts and Doilies Crochet Valentine Bunting

Hi everyone! I”m Erica from 5 Little Monsters. I am really excited to share my first post here on Craftaholics Anonymous and to be a part of the Creative Team this year. If you have ever looked at my blog then you will know that I love to crochet! I also enjoy sewing and other crafts but more often than not I can be found crocheting. As a result today”s post is a crochet project and it is most likely not the last one that you will see from me.

Since it is February I wanted to do something for Valentine”s Day but that could also work for other occasions. The idea that I came up with is this crochet valentine bunting with hearts and doilies. It would look cute hung on a mantel or wall as a Valentine”s decoration or it could be used to decorate a little girls room or a baby shower, a photo prop, or a DIY Wedding.

I have included instructions on how to make two different versions of the crochet valentine bunting; one with hearts and one without. The one with just the doilies would be so fun for a DIY wedding! Wedding season is just around the corner, you know.

I used 100% cotton worsted weight yarn to make the buntings. You could use other types of yarn but I chose cotton because I feel like the finished product has a little bit more stiffness and holds its shape really well. Also, some other types of yarn can have a little bit of fuzziness and the cotton yarn gave me the nice, crisp look I was going for. I used Lily Sugar and Cream yarn to make mine.  I bought the super size (4 oz.) balls and still had enough left to make some dishcloths so the regular size (2.5 oz) balls should be plenty to make the size that I did.

My heart version ended up about 68 inches from one hanging loop to the other, about 56 inches if you measure from the first heart to the last heart. I made 4 doilies and 5 hearts.

The version without the hearts was a little shorter at about 48 inches from end to end. For that one I made 5 doilies. You could easily make them longer or shorter by using more or less hearts and/or doilies.

Let”s start with the doily. The finished size of each doily was about 7 1/2 inches across the top, straight edge and about 4 inches from top to bottom.

Row 1: Start with a magic ring, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 6 dc in magic ring (7 dc)

Row 2: ch 3 (counts as first dc), turn, dc in first stitch, 2 dc in each stitch until you have one stitch left, dc in last stitch (top of ch 3 from the first row) (13 dc)

Row 3: ch 5 (counts as dc ch 2), turn, skip 1 stitch, dc in next, [ch 2, skip 1, dc in next] repeat to end (7 dc, 6 ch spaces)

Row 4: ch 3 (counts as first dc), turn, [(dc, ch 1, dc) in ch space, dc in next dc], repeat to end (19 dc, 6 ch spaces)

Row 5: ch 6 (counts as dc ch 3), turn, sc in ch space, [ch 6, sc in next ch space] repeat to last ch space, ch 3, dc in last stitch (7 ch loops)

Row 6: ch 1, turn, sc in first stitch, 4 sc in ch 3 space, 8 sc in each of the next 5 ch6 spaces, 4 sc in last ch space, sc in top of dc (third ch of that ch loop)

Row 7: ch 1, turn 90 degrees so you are working across the top of the doily, sc evenly across the top (usually about 1 sc in the side of each sc and 2 sc in the edge of each dc but just try to make a nice straight edge)

Finish off, weave in ends and make as many more as you need for your bunting. For the heart bunting I made 4 and for the doily only version I made 5.

Now onto the hearts. The finished size of the hearts is about 3 1/2 x 4 inches.

Start with a magic ring

Round 1: ch 5 (counts as dc ch 2), 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, slip stitch to 3rd chain of beginning ch 5 to join (12 dc, 4 ch spaces)

Round 2: ch 3 (counts as first dc), [(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch space, dc in next 3 dc] repeat 2 more times, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch space, dc in next 2 dc, slip stitch to beginning ch 3 (28 dc, 4 ch spaces)

Round 3: slip stitch over to corner chain space, 9 dc in 4th dc from corner (center dc), slip stitch in next corner ch space, 9 dc in 4th dc from corner, slip stitch in next corner (2 9dc shells)

Finish off, weave in ends and repeat until you have the number of hearts you need. I made 5, 2 in one color and 3 in the other.

Now we just need to attach them all together. Let”s start with the heart and doily version.

Start by chaining 10, then slip stitch to first chain. This will create a loop for hanging, then chain 18. Next you will attach the first heart, I wanted to keep the edge of the heart clean so I attached them by turning the heart over and single crocheting through the back of two stitches at the top of the bump part of the heart. After making the two single crochets you will chain 7 then single crochet twice on the other side of the heart. Now your heart should be attached. Chain 3 and then single crochet across the top edge of the doily. Chain 3 and attach your next heart. Continue until all of your pieces are connected, chaining 3 between each doily and heart and 7 between the two bumps of each heart. Once you have attached your last heart chain 28 and slip stitch to the tenth chain from your hook to create the other hanging loop. Weave in ends and your Valentine bunting is done.

Connecting the version without the hearts is a little different but it is a lot easier because everything you are connecting has a nice straight edge.

I started the same way, chain 10, slip stitch to the first chain to create a loop, then chain 15. Single crochet across the top of your first doily, chain 1, single crochet across the top of the next doily and repeat until all of the doilies are attached. Chain 25 and slip stitch to the tenth ch from the hook to create a loop. Finish off, weave in ends and you are done.

I hope you enjoyed my first project here on Craftaholics! I can”t wait to share more ideas and to see what the projects the other members of the team share.
