Hey ya’ll! It’s Amber here from jRoxDesigns {the Creative Team} and I have a treat for you today!  I always love a great recipe that has been handed down from generation to generation.  Every Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas my Mom treats us to our favorite family recipes which includes the most amazing cream pie.  The recipe has been handed down from my great great grandmother but you see up until a couple years ago no matter how hard my Mom tried…the pie would never set it was always a runny mess!  It didn’t matter to us though because it was so delicious!

So you want to know the secret?  Well the original recipe was handed down from my great great grandmother Cinda, to her daughter Kate who then shared her recipe with sister-in-law, my great grandmother Alyce.  But you see poor Alyce, every time she tried to be a good wife and bake her husband Floyd the cream pie he so dearly loved it would never thicken up right.  But low and behold every time her sister-in-law Kate (Floyd’s older sister) or Cinda would make the pie it looked perfect and tasted fantastic.  Well, 60+ years after Cinda’s death my Mom came across big sister Kate’s recipe box and right there was the cream pie recipe but it was NOT the recipe we had been using for the past two generations!  You see it appears that for some strange reason Alyce was never passed down the right recipe!  I wonder why Cinda and Kate didn’t want her baby brother’s new wife to have the family recipe!  Poor Alyce!

To celebrate the big family discovery my sweet Mom created custom pie plates for my sister and I with the CORRECT cream pie recipe which I am sharing with you today!  To return the favor I made both my Mom and my sister tea towels printed with Aunt Kate’s original hand written recipe from Spoonflower!

So here it is…the original…simple cream pie recipe!

The story about the cream pie is great. We thought we had lost a great family recipe because my Great Aunt would not share it because it was a secret. She had written it down and put it in her safety deposit box. We found it after she passed. She was very proud she was the only one who could make for so long. If any of you have a “secret” recipe, if you don’t want to share it now at least keep it where someone can find it after you pass.

I’m so glad you found the recipe too! It was a day for celebrating when we finally came across the REAL recipe so many years after her passing. We can’t help but think of them all every time we have a slice!

How does one get a favorite recipe put on a pie plate like that?

Hey Barbara! My Mom ordered them from Pfaltzgraff but that was back in 2005. It doesn’t look like they sell them any more but a quick search around the internet and I found a couple other places that sell similar versions. There are even some super cute ones on Etsy as well!

How great is that?!?! We love sugar cream pie in our family! My grandma has been making her grandma’s recipe for decades. To be honest, my husband now makes the best cream pie after my grandma :) It’s his job every Thanksgiving now to make it! What a great story you have there! I LOVE the pie plate! I will have to look at making something like that for my grandma. She would go nuts! I hope you had a blessed Easter!

Might try a some cornstarch to make it less runny.
