Porch Post Candle Holders

A few years ago, Davis and I discovered our local Habitat for Humanity’s “Restore“. I’m sure many of you know what this is, but for those who don’t, this is a place where you can donate home building supplies and home goods to be resold to the public. The proceeds help fund the construction of new Habitat for Humanity homes. Kind of like a thrift store for building supplies and treasures.

Anyways, we found these awesome old white Porch Posts that were very weathered…. and one lucky porch post got a ride home in our little Jetta. We (as in Davis) cut the post into segments and made two candle holders for my mantle. I recently decided to give them a makeover: I lightly sanded them to even out the cracked and peeling paint and then wiped dark wood stain over the entire thing. This highlighted the natural distressing from being used as a porch post for years and made the white paint now off-white as well as sealed the wood. They now stand out nicely on my white mantle.

I love that! I saw some old stair balusters at a flea market and thought they were so pretty. I passed them up but they would have made beautiful candleholders! Anything to add architectural interest to a bland builder's home.

Wow, they look so fancy! I've often thought about staining over painted items, but i was always too afraid to ruin it. what kind of stain did you use?
