if you were stranded on an island….

and could take only ONE crafting tool, what would it be?

i was faced with this dilemma while we were in between houses last month patiently waiting to move into our new home….ok, i exaggerated. i was allotted one BOX of crafting supplies, not just one tool. BUT the one box limitation on what i could bring sure made me ponder what crafting tools and supplies i simply can not live without. {no, living for 1 entire month without crafting was out of the question. i would have died. not even joking.}

my answer

my flexible tape measurer. i use this tool seriously for every craft i make. whether i’m sewing or general crafting, it is just so handy! its perfect to measure round, curved, and weird shaped objects. plus, it fits in my pocket so its by my side the entire time i’m at crafting. no need to hunt it down in the middle of a project or try to remember where i set it down. i’ll admit i’m a bit attached to this little numbered tool of mine. as in i lost my flexi tape measurer and was on the verge of tears until i found it. yes, that’s how much i rely on this little guy! pathetic right?

so, my question for all you lovely crafters today is,

if you were stranded on an island and could have only 1 craft tool, what would it be?

i’m honestly curious to see what your fave tools are. {ok, so i just want to see if i’m the only nut job that relies too much on my flexi tape measure. lol}

Currently I’m…..

raving over this delish recipe. again. <3

Hi! I'm Linda, the craft addict behind Craftaholics Anonymous®, a craft blog. Crafting is cheaper than therapy, right? When not crafting, I can be found chasing my 2 small {but very energetic!} boys or playing with my new baby girl. Or shoe shopping... because you can never have too many shoes! Happy crafting! ♥

I had to stop and think about my past projects and what tool I used most if not every time. And that would be my ruler! Rarely a project EVER gets made around here without my trusty ruler. I would be lost without it! :)

    1. 2.1

I totally feel ya Michele!! my ruler just have to be bendy! lol thanks for stopping by and joining the discussion!!
      happy crafting!

I’m torn between a pair of knitting needles or a great pair of scissors. There really isn’t anything I make without scissors, though.

    1. 3.1

ah scissors! yes, a must have!
happy crafting and may you not have to make this difficult decision! haha
      Linda

Wow!! That is so tough. It would be so hard to bring just one item. And I was going to say my hot glue gun. But is there electricity on this deserted island?? Hmmm… dilemma! So I would probably have to bring my Exacto knife. I seriously use this thing allllll the time! I’m sure I’d need it on my island! :-)

    1. 4.1

Several people have said an exacto knife. How interesting! thanks for stopping by and joining the discussion Amy!
      happy crafting,

Does a sheep count lol. I could whittle needles or a hook if I had to, a sharp rock could act as scissors but without a sheep for yarn….what would I do???

Seriously though, I feel you on that tape measure. I have 2 because my daughter likes to swipe mine when I’m not looking.

  6. 6

I have so many tape measures it’s probably ridiculous! If I had to narrow it down to one tool, I simply couldn’t do it. Not possible, I use too many!

    1. 6.1

LOL yes it is definitely a difficult question!!!
      happy crafting,
      Linda
PS maybe i’ll have to borrow some of your tape measures! lol i only have 1!

  7. 7

Wow! That’s a tough one! It’s a toss up between my scissors and glue gun! :)

  8. 8

So hard to choose. I would pick my sewing machine. In second place would be my silhouette sd.

I would say hot glue gun! I love the hot glue gun! I would say I love mine, but i don’t I need to get a better one :)

I am in the same situation, only most ALL my crafting supplies were banished to the storage unit until we sell the house… that was in FEBRUARY… ahhhh and I have a daughter getting married in August so I NEED those supplies, alas, I’ve had to actually buy stuff I already have. I cannot live without my sewing machine. And scissors. And glue gun.

    1. 10.1

oh no!!! how are you surviving?! sounds awful! glad you’re sneaking in some resources haha
      happy crafting!

I think my gel medium…. I could tear paper for my mixed media collages and even fabric, but I’d need a way to adhere everything together. Great question! Makes me want to experiment with that idea…. :) thanks!

I think my paper trimmer is a daily use tool for me, judging by what is sitting on my work top at all times but I’d have to say scissors or my ATG glue gun also. A girl has pockets to smuggle things in you know.

  13. 14

I would take my pink sewing box…..sneaky A, cause it would be full to the brim with all my bits….! That is just one thing isn’t it? Remeber girls, we are good a justifying just about anything when we are craftaholics!!! hehe.
P.s I have recently found your site &&&&& it’s great.
    Cheers Nic

    1. 14.1

BAHAHAHAHA love it Nic!! that was sneaky, but so perfect! good thinking! So glad you found me! and yes, us Craftaholics do have to stick together ;o)

i recently had this same problem, but i was narrowd down to a jansport bookbag and my sewing machine(only because i had to make stuff for church, thank god) and its driving me nuts not having full creative freedom. but i think that if i was stranded i would have to choose my crochet hooks. its simple and i could make stuff from whatever i found on the island: torn leaves, seaweed, woven together dried grass lol.

    1. 15.1

I totally feel ya! having your creative supplies limited is so tough! nice choice on the crochet hooks!
      happy crafting,
      Linda

  15. 16

i know it’s silly but i am obsessed with my Beacons 3-in-one glue! i swear i could glue a car to the pavement or feathers to fabric (yes, i’ve done it). it is used in almost all of my projects

    1. 16.1

I’ve never heard of Beacons! I’ll have to check it out!! sounds awesome!! Thanks for stopping by and joining the discussion!
      happy crafting,

I really wanted to say hot glue gun… but then I started over thinking it and figured there wouldn’t be any electricity… in which case I would bring paint…

    1. 18.1

paint?! interesting! it would def keep you busy! thanks for stopping by and joining the discussions!
      happy crafting,

I would definitely want my scissors. I could probably figure everything else out, but my scissors would make my world so much easier.

    1. 19.1

i agree! scissors would def make it a lot easier! haha thanks for stopping by and joining the discussion!
      happy crafting,
      Linda

  19. 20

definitely a hot glue gun! i use mine every day. i am sure there would be lots of stuff on the island to glue together. :)

    1. 20.1

love it Zoe! its amazing what you can do with a glue gun, isn’t it?! thanks for stopping by and joining the discussion!
      happy crafting,

  20. 21

Omgosh that is impossible!! What a hard question! I have no idea! …maybe my double stick tape gun?/…???

    1. 21.1

I know! such a difficult Q! i like the double stick gun idea! it would be very helpful! thanks for joining the discussion!
      happy crafting,
      Linda

  21. 22

The first thing that came to mind was scissors. Not my sewing machine, not my Silhouette… my scissors. Cuz if I was stranded on an island I would be using my scissors for a whole lot more than crafting!

    1. 22.1

scissors would def be very handy!! thanks for stopping by and joining the discussion!
      happy crafting,
      Linda

  22. 23

I would want my needle nose pliers that have built in wire cutters. I use them in almost every project.

    1. 23.1

Ah, brilliant Jenny! I love my needle nose pliers too! plus you could use them for others things. Nice thinking!
thanks for stopping by and joining the discussion!

  23. 24

hhmmmmm that is tough…I am thinking probably scissors. My hands aren’t that strong lol so I would need something to cut various materials lol I feel confident I could figure the rest out haha!

    1. 24.1

scissors!! that is def a must have! thanks for stopping by and joining the discussion!
      happy crafting,

    Roslyn

I have moved 3x to a different country and the wait between packing and getting stuff is very stressful. And then the wait to find everything and get it into some order to be able to do something. It actually makes you realise how much you NEED creativity.
My favourite tool has got to be snips – for cutting threads. Although once or twice when I have been miles away they have been my worst enemy also – snipping the fabric not the threads.

    1. 25.1

Moving is so hard for the creative soul, isn’t it Roslyn? Thanks for joining the discussion! I completely agree with you on the snips!
      happy crafting,
      Linda

  25. 26

My sewing machine. Stashed away in my sewing machines bobbin/tool draw I would make sure I packed my seam ripper. On the island I would use my seam ripper to carve a crochet hook out of stick and I would make yarn and weave fabric out of the island leaves and other island treasures so I could happily crochet and sew my island days away.

Scissors would be my quick answer, but I would totally be negotiating for one tote of supplies. How could I leave my tape runner, glue gun, ruler and twine behind??? No…I just couldn’t.

  27. 28

I would have to say my Cricut handsdown!

    1. 28.1

Awesome Daynene! that would def keep you busy! thanks for stopping by and joining the discussion!
      happy crafting,
      Linda

  28. 29

Oohhh…I hope i’m never in a situation where I can only have one craft item lol! BUT if I were..I would have to say either my exacto knife or….my duct tape collection….I LOVE DUCT TAPE! This was fun! I love reading what other people couldn’t live with out :)

      1. Yes Duct Tape lol..I have every color and pattern of Duct Tape possible..it’s awesome! I’ve made numerous crafty things over the years with it. I could make clothes, shoes, a blanket, a roof for shelter..it would be the ultimate craft tool for being stranded on an island :) I think I would pick Zebra print..raawwrrr hot momma lol ;)

Let’s see now, stranded on an island, no Hobby Looby or Michael’s in site. So to be practical, I think I’d have to have a good set of knitting needles or a crochet hook. I’m gonna need a sturdy hammock to relax.
