How to Crochet a Basket

May is a busy month at our house, and between my birthday, mother’s day, my daughter’s birthday and half my friends’ birthdays, I have my hands full especially when it comes to gift giving. Today, I am sharing a simple tutorial on How to Crochet a Basket, which makes for a quick last minute and economical gift! (Mother’s Day gift anyone? Talk about last minute!)

Crochet Spa Basket Tutorial

Supplies:
cotton worsted weight yarn (i used Lily Sugar n’ Cream)
5.5 mm hook
needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations:
CH- chain
ST- stich
SL ST- slip stitch
SC- single crochet
DC- double crochet

Step 1: Make a magic loop (learn how to make a magic loop here or at Hip2Thrift). CH 3, 12 DC in the loop, join with Sl ST at the top of the CH 3.

Step 2- CH 3, DC in the same stitch as the CH3, 2 DC in each stitch around. Join with Sl ST to the top of the CH 3

Step 3: CH 3, DC in the same stitch as the CH3, *2 DC in next st, 1 DC, 2 DC*, all around. Join with Sl ST to the top of the CH 3

You are basically making a flat circle. Keep adding 1DCs in between 2DCs, depending on how big you want the basket bottom to be. I stopped at the previous row. Make sure that your circle is flat.

Step 5- CH 1, SC into the back loop of next stitch and all around. SL ST to the beginning CH1.

This step creates a ledge and makes for a good transition to the next rows that will all be going up, creating the walls of the basket.

crocheting tutorialStep 6 – regular SC all around. Join with a SL ST. You can make it as tall as you want here.

You can make it taller and fold it over for an awesome cuff and more sturdy look.

Step 7- Weave in ends with your upholstery needle.

Optional: Depending on how loose or tight you crochet, you can spray the basket with a starch spray and iron.

I love how easy these baskets are to make! If you use thicker yarn, or even t-shirt yarn, you can these up in no time. You can use two colors for an awesome color block look. These baskets are versatile and can be used to hold spa essentials, make-up, or as storage anywhere in the house. Give it away as a gift filled with awesome spa goodies, or keep it for yourself. I have a couple that I use whenever I have guests and I fill them with washcloths, small size toiletries, and even some treats.

Now that you know how to crochet a basket, go make some baskets now!

Thank you for reminding me about crocheted baskets. I make all sorts of containers but forgot about the crocheted ones. I’ll have to get busy making them for Christmas – I know, it’s a little early – but what a neat gift to give with all sorts of things inside…bath items, toys, candy, etc.

I just learned how to make these, and they are so quick and easy! Also, you can make a pretty nice size bowl with just one skein of yarn…so these can be pretty inexpensive to make. I do have one question though, I used Lion Brand – Wool-Ease yarn and a 10mm needle (N?)…but my bowl/basket was a little flimsy. Any ideas on how to go about stiffening it up a little? I would like it to stand up a little better.
    Thanks for the great tutorial!!

Found this via Pinterest. I love working with cotton and especially like the idea of folding over the edge of the bowl. I can’t wait to try them. Thanks for a great tutorial.

Just what I was looking for, I lead a Group ” Out-Patient Psych, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA.
We do not have a budget, so if I can get a Free Pattern or additional ideas for the Group, is just fantastic.
    Thank you

This is a great idea. I especially like how you used it for the q-tips. I needed an idea for that ugly little jar I have. Thanks for sharing that.

hi, found your fab tutorial via pintrest when I needed a break from crocheting a giant granny square shrug (gets a bit boring when you get to 40 odd sitches) I had recently bought some coloured raffia. I ended up crocheting a few baskets in different colour blocks. Raffia is definitely tougher to crochet but has a nice stiff texture. Thanks again.

Hi! I am attempting to make this basket right now. My circle is not coming out flat. I have counted my stitches 5 times. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I must have done something wrong. I have a beautiful circle but don’t how it could become a basket:(

    Help!

Thanks for this pattern! I have tried several different patterns using only the sc, and it just wasn’t working. Plus, all those patterns were to small for what I had in mind, a laundry basket. I was able to make this as big as I wanted, thanks to your pattern. There is one part of the pattern that could be confusing for newbies, I’m not, but did happen to think of it.

(*2 DC in next st, 1 DC in the next 2 stitches, 2 DC*, all around. Join with Sl ST to the top of the CH 3.

You are basically making a flat circle. Keep adding 1DCs in between 2DCs). When you follow a pattern, and it tells you to go back repeat after the *, don’t do that exactly with this pattern, after you’ve done the 2 DC, 1 DC, 2 DC for the first row, Do this for the rest, increasing 1 DC, depending on how big you want it. Next row 2 DC, 2 DC. Next row, 2 DC, 3 DC, Next row, 2 DC, 4 DC, and so on. I hope it was ok to post this, when I first started this would have confused me, and just wanted to clarify that part.

You could make this into a square or rectangular basket very easily. I am going to get myself some cotton yarn…this would be a great pick-up project.

Thanks for all the great ideas.

How much would you sell these little baskets for at a craft show? I was thinking $3 or $4 each.
