The ruffled skirt is so cute! I want to print off the directions to make one, but it is unclear when it prints. Is there anyway you can send me the document so I can print it off? It’s just easier for me to have a tangible copy of it.

    Thanks,
    Gina

I tired making this tonight. My first attempt ever, at making a skirt. Aside from the phone calls to my mom, who sews – everything, it went O.K. I got a little frustrated right before I was about to sew my ruffle on because my thread kept getting tangled. Grr. So I will revisit this possibly tomorrow night when I have reloaded my patience card.
I did chose a black striped seer-sucker fabric. I was also thinking about possibly sewing on two cute ruffled pockets onto the front of it with funky buttons.
I’ll let everyone know how it turns out, will post pic once I’m done.

My first attempt wasn’t a total success but I still like it and will wear it anyways!!! I can’t wait to make more.

Hmmm……Love the skirt and tried to do my measurements. It failed to be something that would fit me. Perhaps a small child, but not me.

    1. 16.1

I’m so sorry, Shelly! The feedback I’ve received for others has been that it worked great! {and the pics they sent are adorable!} So I’m not sure why yours didn’t work. Did you measure the widest part of your hips? Maybe try having someone else measure for you?

        1. Hi Mira,
I am so sorry, but I did not take pictures of how I made this skirt! It was a last minute project and I didn’t have time to do a thorough tutorial. If you try to make it and have questions, feel free to email me. I’d love to help!!

Thanks for posting this! I’ve banned restrictive clothing for the summer (ie..shorts and pants, nothing too serious mind you) and your skirt will definitely pass the summer wardrobe requirements. Now, to find the perfect fabric and get stitchin’! Cheers!

I LOVE RUFFLES!! I just bought a ruffler foot for my machine. Best $20 i have spent yet. It turns 44″ of material in to ruffles in about 1 minute. LOVE IT!!

    1. 20.1

I have been coveting a ruffler foot and finally ordered one for my machine. YAY!! thanks for stopping by Ali!

Cute skirt! If my thighs are wider than my hips, should I use that measurement instead? I always have trouble with skirts & pants becasue of my thighs. :(

    1. 23.1

      Hi Cory,
Yes, use whichever is larger out of your thigh and hip measurement. Can’t wait to see yours! :D

I LOVE this! l And the tutorial looks so easy. I think I might try this this weekend. Did you use just regular cotton material like the kind you would purchase for quilts?

Thank you for the tutorial – love that there’s no pattern involved. I had a yard of fabric I was itching to make a skirt with and decided to just jump in and do it. Have to say I do not enjoy sewing ruffles, but it turned out cute. If I weren’t technologically challenged I would send you a pic.

This skirt is super cute and I made my first ever skirt following your instructions. Thank you so much for sharing :) i will send you a pic very soon.
I am a novice and would like to know if I can follow sewing instruction for knitted fabric on cotton/ poplin. Sorry, I do not have much knowledge about fabrics and draping.

    1. 31.1

Awesome! I’m so glad you used my instructions! I would love to see your skirt, when you have a moment!
      happy crafting,

Hi, Thanks so much for this tutorial. I had been looking for a skirt pattern just like this. I have no experience with ruffles, so I have a few questions. On the skirt itself, how close to the bottom edge do you sew the ruffle? Also, when you are gathering the fabric circle for the ruffle, how far from the top edge do you put your gathering stitches? Do you sew the ruffle to the skirt at this same distance? I know these seem like silly questions (like I should know already), but it would really help if you could give me some idea. Thanks so much!

    1. 32.1

      Hi Kathy,
I think I sewed it a couple inches above or so. {it was a couple years ago!} For the gathering stitches, you’ll want to sew them about 1/4″ from the edge. And yes, you’ll want to sew it to the skirt at the same stitch length- 1/4″.
      Hope this helps!
      thanks,
      Linda

  36. 33

Hi Linda. This is great for me. Im new to Pinterest and this look like it my have been posted quite a while ago, but I thought I would try to ask how. I’m a plus size (but losing weight slowly, down 77lbs) and wondered if you thought I should do anything special to make this darling skirt you designed?? Thank you and hope you are well!

    1. 33.1

      Hi Cristie,
Congrats on the the weight loss!! yay!!!! That’s a lot of hard work, for sure. As for the pattern, just take your measurements today and use them in the pattern. Depending on how fast you’re losing weight, you could sew it a tiny bit small and then when you reach that mini goal, you’ll have a new skirt to celebrate the accomplishment! Good luck! :)

Thanks for teaching us the easiest way of sewing shorts without a pattern and the ruffled skirt is so dainty and easy to do.

    1. 34.1

You are very welcome! Glad you enjoyed the tutorials :)

What are the settings that make the difference with the ruffler doing “pleating” vs the ruffler doing “gathering?”
