My little girl LOVES unicorns! I knew I had to make her a DIY Unicorn Costume for Halloween this year. And she absolutely loves it!

DIY Unicorn Costume for Halloween. Kids will love how comfy and warm it is! Love the thick mane and tail.

Handmade Unicorn Costume

This was actually a really easy costume to put together. And I love that its warm and comfortable. That can be hard sometimes when it comes to handmade Halloween costumes!

I wanted her unicorn costume to be cute, girly, whimsical, and colorful. She loves pink and purple, so she went nuts over the mane and tail!

Yes, I bribed her with licorice during this photo shoot. As you can see, candy always makes my subjects a lot happier on and off film! haha!

Ok, I LOVE this picture! She kept looking up at her horn and grabbing at it. She’d go all crossed eyed to take a peek at it. It was hilarious!

I made the mane and tail super thick and chunky and it totally made the costume awesome! It made a nice contrast to the gold on the horn.

Supplies:

  • white hoodie {I used this one.}
  • white leggings {I used these leggings.}
  • hot glue gun
  • light pink yarn
  • hot pink yarn
  • purple yarn
  • white felt
  • light pink felt
  • pink felt
  • purple felt
  • gold tape {I used this gold tape.}
  • scissors
  • packing paper

DIY Unicorn Halloween Costume Tutorial :: Super easy way to make a handmade unicorn horn

  1. To make the unicorn horn, take 3-4 sheets of packing paper, fold into quarters and roll into a narrow cone shape.
  2. Wrap white felt around the paper and glue in place. Trim off excess felt with scissors.
  3. Cut the horn so that it measures about 8.5″ long.

4. Starting at the top, wrap gold tape around the horn. I secured the tape with a little hot glue at the beginning and end.

Felt ear

5. Cut 2 white ovals and 2 slightly smaller pink ovals for the ears. Glue the pink and white layers together and then pinch one pointy end together and glue in the pinch to create a 3D ear. {see below}

6. Hot the ears and the unicorn horn to the top of the white hoodie.

7. Make 5 small felt flowers and hot glue around the horn. {There are lots of felt flower tutorials on Pinterest.}

8. Use the light pink, hot pink, and purple yarn to create a mane and tail. Hot glue in place.

9. Cut a large pink oval measuring about 8″ for the belly and hot glue in place.

UPDATED: 10. For the main, I wrapped the 3 colors of yarn around my hand 10 times to create loops of yarn. I tied a small piece of yarn around one side of the loop to hold in place and cut the other side. {similar to making yarn pom poms} Then I attached the yarn tassel to the seam of the hood where the yarn bundle is held in place with the small piece of yarn tied around the bundle. I repeated this until I had a nice full main all the way down the hood.

11. For the tail, I wrapped the 3 colors of yarn around my arm until it I felt it would make a nice, thick tail. Then like the main, I tied a small piece of yarn around one side of the loop to hold the strands in place. Then I cut the other side of the loop, similar to what you do when making a yarn pom pom. Then I hot glue the tail {which is held together with the small piece of yarn} to the back center of the white leggings.

Then let your little have some fun pretending to be a unicorn! If your kids are like mine, we never put Halloween costumes away. They are worn and played in year round!

    How did you make the mane and tail? This is adorable and I want to make this for my daughter. Also where did you find the white hoodie and leggings?

    1. 2.1

      Hi Brooke, I just looked the 3 colors of yarn around my hand and cut one side and hot glued on for the mane. For the tail, I wrapped the yarn around my hand and elbow to get the right length, cut one end of the yarn loop I created and hot glued onto the back of the white leggings. I found both the hoodie and leggings on Amazon. This is the white hoodie I used: http://amzn.to/1Q2HBej and this set for the leggings: http://amzn.to/1Q2HK1w Hope that helps! If you get a moment, I’d love to see how yours turned out! :) Linda

    I made this for my daughters Halloween costume, and it turned out great! Thank you! I made the horn a little too long so it was a little heavy and awkward, but still adorable.

    I’m just wondering how much yarn you used all together?
    Thanks

    1. 8.1

      I had about 1/2 of the skein left on all 3 colors when I was done. So probably used about 1.5 skeins of yarn total.

    I fell in love with this as soon as I saw it! My 4 yo loves anything horse related and decided that she wanted to be a unicorn for Halloween. This was ridiculously easy for a crafty person to do :) I used a light teal sweater set, per my dd’s request, an teal to white ombre yarn instead of different colors and I added a dollar store crown since she loves Princess Celestial from MLP. I also used a candle to wrap the yarn around for the mane since my hand tends to grow and shrink during previous projects ;) Thank you so much for sharing your craftiness with us!

      Awesome!! Thanks for the feedback, Belinda! :)

    Cute! How did you attach the horn to the hoodie so it wasn’t flopping all over?

    1. 10.1

      Lots of hot glue :)

    Hi!! I just made this costume and it is the cutest eeeever!!!! I’m not sure if I put too much yarn for the main, because when my daughter wears it, the hood just falls back. Do you have any suggestions for fixing that?

    1. 11.1

      Hmm, you could try gluing a headband on the inside of the hoodie for her to wear that might help it stay in place. But if your daughter is like mine, headbands last like 2 mins. If it doesn’t have a drawstring in the hood, you could try adding one in the seam allowance.

    What kind of shoes did she wear?

    1. 12.1

      She just wore her pink crocs. If I had had time, I would have made little brown felt “hooves” to go over her shoes, but I did not.

    I know this post was created quite a while ago. Hoping to get an answer still.

    I’m just wondering if I could attach the tail to the hoodie instead of the leggings? I’d rather use leggings my kiddo already has instead of buying another pair. I wanna keep them afterwards so I’d rather not glue on them.

    If I glued the tail to the hoodie would it look funky?

    1. 14.1

      Hi Ashley! No, I think gluing the tail to the hoodie is a great idea! The tail may shift around and not be centered when viewed from the back as your cutie twists/turns/walks, but that’s not a big deal and it will save you money. So I say go for it! :)

      You could also just attach the tail to some elastic or ribbon and make a belt. It may need adjusting from time to time but then it isn’t attached to the clothing.

      1. Great idea!

    Such a cute costume!! I’m making this for my 16 month old to wear this weekend.
    I’m trying to figure out how to wrap the felt around the packing paper for the horn….when I wrap it diagonally, the point of the felt doesn’t close right over the point of the packing paper, and then the edge of the felt creates a diagonal edge down the side of the horn, and I don’t see those lines on your horn (maybe covered by the gold tape?). But when I wrap it longways with the felt, the point really doesn’t look right, and the horn loses it’s conical shape. Please let me know how you did it!

    Dear Linda, I just saw your unicorn costume. It‘s awesome!!! My daughter would like to be a unicorn this upcoming carnival ( it‘s a big thing over here) Could you be so kind to help me out how to make the mane. I probable would prefere to use fleece by the way. Thank you very much in advance!

    1. 17.1

      I just hot glued yarn on the hoodie for the mane. You could easily cut strips of fleece and hot glue it for the mane.

    Hi! I know it has been a while since you posted this, but I’m working on this now, and I’m just curious if you had to ball park the number of yarn poms you made to finish the entire mane how many would you say?

    1. 18.1

      I used about half a skeen of each color. Does that help?

    Sarah

    Hi! This is the CUTEST and I’m making it for my daughter this year. She’s beside herself excited. I know I’m being an idiot here, but I’ve read the directions and all the comments and still don’t totally get how you attached the mane and tail to the sweatshirt/pants. I get that you made loops, and then tied one end to create a tassel, but then…did you just glue the whole tassel end to the sweatshirt? Standing up, so the yarn is going up?? I can’t see any evidence of a tassel shape in your pictures and would love to have my main look as full and floppy as yours. Help? Thank you!!

    1. 19.1

      Hi Sarah! I got glued the main and tail to the hoodie and pants. I looped the yarn and then cut both ends and glued on, so not really a tassel.
