This is the recessed light to pendant light converter kit we used. I found it at the home improvement store for $19. You can also find them online here.

Here is a little visual to see how it works:

Recessed light to pendant light converter kit

Step 1 :: Install the recessed light to pendant light converter using the instructions on the box. The kit comes with a converter that you simply screw into the recessed light and a ceiling plate large enough to cover your old can light fixture.

Step 2 :: Use the shade screw mount {or whatever its called} to trace a circle on your wide mouth mason jar lid.

{note: I bought a new wide mouth mason jar even though I had plenty on hand. I wanted to make sure it was clean and didn’t have any residue or guck in it that would cause issues. I bought it at Hobby Lobby for 50% off, so it was a $1.50. But you could easily use a clean wide mouth mason jar you have laying around the house.}

Step 3 :: Using the utility knife, the circle in the mason jar lid.

NOTE: you should wear gloves when doing this step. Preferably cut proof gloves. My dad cut this for me and he chose not to wear them. For safety reasons, please wear gloves!

AND ANOTHER NOTE: We used a low wattage LED light bulb that puts out very little heat. Therefore, we did not put in ventilation holes in the lid. If you are using a traditional or other type of bulb, you WILL need to put in a couple ventilation holes to let the heat out and you will want to do that in this step.

Step 4 :: Put the mason jar lid in the mason jar ring and put over the light bulb base {where a shade would go} and then screw the shade screw mount {is that what its called?} in place to secure the ring and lid. Then simply screw in your light bulb and wide mouth mason jar and you have yourself a DIY Mason Jar Pendant light!
