desk turned bench {a makeover}

bench makeover

my new entry way bench!

Check out my *cute little bench*! isn’t it so stinkin pretty?? i love the butter yellow stripes with the white. perfect combo. I am working on decorating my entry way and just finished this cutie for the entry.  I was going to show it off AFTER I’d made a few pillows  for it and accessorized around it…..but I couldn’t wait any longer! Because this little bench started out rather UGLY. And when I say ugly, I mean dirty, nasty, gross textured paint, bad lines…. uuuuug*LY!  see for yourself:

Bench Makeover

Told ya it was bad. my friend got it for me a couple years ago at a thrift store for like $5. Davis didn’t want to move with it. But I made him pack it. and I’m so glad it did!!!

Anyways, here’s what we did to go from the Before to the After: {yes, Davis helped. I think he was in disbelief that it would actually turn out ok and wanted to see the mess I made of it lol}

First, we removed the top part of the desk that held the little drawer.

Got 4 new premade, chair-height legs at the hardware store.

Then we painted scraped off the old paint on the frame under the bench top and painted everything white.

Upholstered the top or seat of the now bench using this easy upholstering tutorial. The only thing we did different was add a layer of white fabric before the yellow stripes so that the green foam didn’t show through.

Then reassembled and look at that….a bench in stead of a desk! I totally love having a nice little bench to sit on in my entry way.

And for those who are curious, yes, I am still working on decorating my dining room…. and my entry way. At the same time. I think I’m the slowest decorator ever! I guess it doesn’t help that i change my mind constantly. Or that I get distracted. But yeah, someday, hopefully soon, I’ll show you what it all looks like. It will be worth the wait. I promise!

Out of curiosity, what would you have done with this little desk??

don’t forget to……

    hm, I really like the legs! Depending on how tall they are, I think I would have used it as a sofa table – I could really use one! :)

    I love the fabric and the new legs! I think it would have been cute to keep the little shelf on top after a coat of some shiny paint…maybe red and add a cool pillow in maybe turquoise.

    The bench looks lovely! My home is very Shabby Chic. That said, I would have removed the top part of the table and painted it in a high gloss white and used it as a small “garage” on my kitchen countertop. I would have then cut the table in half width-wise, painted them in a gloss white, decoupaged some pink roses onto them and attached them to the wall on both sides of my bed. Add a couple of tall “fufu” lamps and I think it would just be lovely! But…I wouldn’t have had a bench (which you wanted) when I was done. Lol

    The little hutch at the top would have made a darling footstool under the bench for putting on shoes, or little one stepping up, it would be finished just like this one, and maybe paint stripes on the top to match the fabric, or decopage the actual stripe fabric onto the top of the stool.
