Burlap Halloween Wreath Tutorial + Halloween Mantel

This is part of the Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores® Celebrate the Season campaign. All opinions are mine!

With Halloween only 10 days away, I can’t believe I am finally posting my Halloween Mantel! Its been up for a couple weeks, I just haven’t had the time to edit the pictures. Such a busy time of year, isn’t it?! Fall crafting is the best.

halloween mantel

I am excited to show off the Spooky Space in our family room. The focal point of my Halloween Mantel is my black burlap Halloween wreath. It turned out awesome! I love how its a sophisticated spooky. Not the cutsie Halloween look you see a lot.

Lately I’ve really been into peacock feathers. I think they’re totally rad for Halloween! Maybe its because they have “eyes” on them…. which make them spooky, right?!! haha Either way the green is a fun pop of color on my black and white Halloween mantelscape.

celebrate the seasons

I decorated this spooky space for Jo-Ann Store’s Spooky Spaces competition for their Celebrate the Season campaign. You can check out their new Creativity Made Simple site for ideas and inspiration this holiday season. I shopped at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores for the supplies for my Burlap Halloween Wreath.

chalkboard banner

I used my Wood Slice chalkboard and Halloween Apothecary jars from last year. I painted some wood pennants with chalkboard paint for a simple banner that can be used for other events and holidays. I strung it with some twine. Super easy!

  1. Gather supplies from the supply list above.
  2. Tie one end of the black burlap ribbon to the wire wreath form.
  3. From the back of the wreath form, push a small loop of burlap through the wire wreath form in one of the openings and turn sideways.
  4. Continue pushing small loops of burlap through the wire wreath form, but alternating which hole in the wreath form you put them in. This holds the loops in place. Note: you do not have to pull the entire roll of burlap ribbon through the hole each time. Simply push thru loops from the back and as long as you alternate which hole in the wreath for you push them thru, they’ll stay in place. {This wreath uses the same technique as my Fall Burlap Bubble Wreath.}
  5. When you get to the corners, do little loops on the inside hole and larger loops on the outside hole on the wreath form. When your first roll of burlap ribbon ends, tuck it into the wreath form. Then start the second roll of burlap ribbon just like you did the first roll in Step #2.
  6. Continue filling your wreath form with loops or bubbles until it looks full. When you’re all done, tuck in the end of the burlap ribbon. DIY halloween wreath
  7. Using your 2″ wire Halloween ribbon, wrap the ribbon around 3 times {about 8″ wide from end to end} and snip off from roll. Then pinch the center and pull out loops as desired. Then use a small piece of wire to twist around the center and hold in place. I then used a small piece of another ribbon to wrap around the center and hot glued in place.
  8. Tear thin strips of newspaper and using the brush and Mod Podge, decoupage onto the paper mache skull. Tip: use piece of newspaper with lots of print and no pictures for best results.
  9. Hot glue the doily to the black burlap wreath. I put little dots of hot glue in the corners to hold it in place. Then hot glue the peacock feathers, skull, and bow. Make sure the skull is secure with the hot glue. You may also need to use the wire to secure him in place.

I hung my burlap halloween wreath with some black glitter Halloween ribbon, but you can hang yours however you’d like! This wreath is great for a front door, mantel, or around the house.
