Striped Shower Curtain TUTORIAL

DIY Shower Curtain

In this house, we take baths seriously. My boys would spend hours every day in a bath tub, if I let them. {when will the pool open again?  maybe i should start a “Pool Opening” countdown. haha} So having a good looking shower curtain in their bathroom was a high priority…..because I knew I was going to be seeing a lot of it. So I made this simple striped  DIY shower curtain for their bathroom in December…..in the middle of all the holiday craziness….So I am just now getting around to posting about it. {i swear it takes me an entire month to get things back under control around here after Christmas.} And of course I’ll show you how I sewed it!

This is the boys’ bathroom. I am in the process of decorating it…. I still need to paint the walls and decorate…. BUT I got the shower curtain done, so that’s a start.

I am totally digging stripes right now and I think this green stripe fabric is darling for boys.

I got the fabric from Ikea. Its heavy home decor fabric, so it hangs nicely on the rod.

And the stripes are kind of awesome…if I do say so myself!

How to Sew a Shower Curtain

supplies: 4 yards total of 45″ wide heavy weight fabric {ex: cotton canvas, home decor fabric}, thread, scissors, 10 or 12- 7/16″ eyelets with applicator tool, hammer, sewing machine, fabric marker or chalk.

  1. Cut your fabric into half so that you have 2 pieces of 2 yards of fabric. Then lay your fabric out paying attention to the design so that the design goes the correct direction on both pieces of fabric. Sew the 2 pieces together making sure the patterns match up. {this was fairly easy with stripes} At this point, your fabric will measure approx. 72″x90″. Cut your fabric so that it measures 72″ wide by 74″ tall. With your marker or chalk, designate which side is the top of the shower curtain and which side is the bottom. TIP: I recommend putting the seam towards the bottom of the shower curtain so that it is less noticeable.
  2. Press open the seam that you sewed in Step 1 as shown.
  3. Along the 2 side edges of the fabric and the bottom edge, fold over and iron 1/2″ and then fold over another 1/2″ and iron. Then sew a top stitch over the folds. For the top edge, fold over 1″ and iron and then fold over another 1″ and iron and top stitch.
  4. With a fabric marker or chalk, mark out where the 10 or 12 eyelets will go along the top of the shower curtain. Note: You want to put the eyelets in the seam where there is 3 layers of fabric to support the eyelet. With sharp, pointy scissors, cut small holes for the eyelets. Then following the directions on the eyelet packing, attach eyelets with a hammer. TIP: You will have to hammer with all your might to get those eyelets to flatten out. As in, your cute little muscles are going to get a serious work out. {Yes, I will admit, I was a little sore the next day. ha!}

Word of Caution: Watch out for your fingers when hammering those eyelets. I know you’ll be hammering your little heart out, but let’s not smash those digits, ok?

Once your eyelets are in place, hang your DIY shower curtain on your rings or hooks and you’re good to go!

*I have a cheap store bought liner on the hooks that you can’t see.

So cute! I think that green matches the duvet that I bought at Ikea a few months ago. I didn’t see the striped fabric, but I sure could use some to make a few pillows to match!

would this be easy to do with a chevron pattern, or would that be too difficult to match up when you’re sewing the two pieces together?

I love this…I am wanting to do something different in my boys bathroom that isnt to kiddy, bc all our guest use that bathroom so this could be a great solution, chevron maybe?

top stitched folds at bottom and sides would have a technical term of “hem” :)

Thank you! I was searching for a shower curtain tutorial and then you posted one! Amazing! I was just staring at some perfect home decor fabric for my boys bathroom the other day and wondering what I would need to do.

I love how this turned out! I considered the exact same project but ended up using the same Ikea fabric for curtains for my son’s room. I made them black-out curtains and I love them! Better yet, they love them!

Any chance you would make one of these and sell it to me? Or at least buy the fabric and ship it to me? We don’t have an Ikea anywhere near here and they don’t sell it on their website.

      Hi Jennifer,
I live about 3.5 hours away from Ikea, or I would totally grab some fabric for you! I won’t be headed up there for months. I’m so sorry!!

These may be a dumb questions as I am new to this, should I wash and dry the fabric first? I am assuming I should as with all other sewing projects. Also the chevron patterned fabric I bought for this project, I will have to make my panels match up vertically b/c of the pattern… do you think that will be too obvious?

      Hi Tiffany,
The fabric I used is home decor fabric and should only be dry cleaned only, so I didn’t worry about it shrinking. If the fabric you use is cotton or you plan on machine washing it, it would be a good idea to wash it beforehand. As for the chevron, I think you’ll be just fine to match it up vertically, because you can hide the seam in a fold very easily :)
      happy crafting,
